She plops herself into the sofa, so tired she almost started dozing off if not for the barking of her neighbor's dog. Violet must have seen a bat again. Her neighbour's dog, a lab, whom she adores except when the dog goes berserk and barking in the middle of the night.

She stands up and gets a glass of water. And proceeds to go to her bedroom when something catches her eye. 

It was a yellow envelope on top of a book, that she's never seen, on her desk table. 

She goes there instead. The yellow envelope is addressed to Nicomaine. She opens it.

It says, "Please read the book"

The book cover was dark gray. It did not contain a title.

She opens the first page.

"Even as a child, I've always been fascinated by numbers. Numbers are used to count, measure and label. Like Math, it can be quantified and it's exact. I like that it's precise, that you always know what the right number is or the right answer to a problem. It's black and white and never grey. It's always reasonable and logical."
