"What?!" Shrieks Haley.

I smile at her, hoping for her to drop the subject.

"Why have you been doing that?"

My heart beats in my chest. If I tell anyone and he ever finds out he'll kill me.

I gulp. "I.... um.... Ran away?" I say. Which is partly true.

She searches my face for other displays of emotion and then sighs.

She turns to the nurse.

"When can she be released?"

That sentence brings back bad memories.

-Flashback-

My Mother was in the hospital bed, black bruises blooming on her pale skin.

Her chest rose up and down shakily.

I was just about the height of the bed, about 7 years old.

"When can she be released?" Dylan said.

And that's when the machines stopped beeping.

The doctors ushered us out of the room, thinking I hadn't noticed.

Mom's husband, Dylan took my arm tightly and whispered in my ear.

"This is your fault." And that was when it started.

-Flashback Over-

"Cara,Cara?"

"What?" I ask.

"You zoned out" Haley says.

"Oh Sorry" I say, wiping my eyes.

Haley looks at me weirdly but shakes it off.

She looks over her shoulder.

"I think my Dad will be here soon" She says.

My body freezes up. I can't trust men ever after all Dylan did to me.

"C-can I leave now?" I ask the nurse, stuttering.

She looks at me. "If you wish"

I swing my legs out of bed and notice I'm still in my clothes.

I grab my bag and-

"Hey, Where ya goin'?" Haley stops me.

I stumble out of the hospital room and out into the corridor.

As I turn the corner, I bang into someone.

"Oof"

I fall to the ground.

"Are you okay?" A strangely familiar voice asks me.

And I look up.
