Chapter Ten

As Bella opened her letter, uneasy about invading her privacy, I motioned for Alice to give her some space, but Bella stopped us and asked where we were going. I told her, but she didn’t want us to leave, which in turn made me feel a bit better. She drew her head down to focus her eyes on the letter and started to read. Alice was still stewing over not being able to see Bella anymore which bothered me.

I put all my attention on Bella to make sure she would be fine after reading Nathaniel’s letter. Her entire body started to quiver and I could see that she was visibly becoming even more upset. Bella’s beautiful face features became saddened, then furious, and as I took one single step towards her for comfort, my own body went completely solid.

So my eyes never left Bella’s view, I couldn’t feel anything. Whatever this was, it was not painful but was disheartening, knowing again I was failing my love. The only working part of me was my brain – I was in pain of not being able to take care of Bella. Who could be doing this to me? Alice was as frozen as me.

Bella was looking at the both of us now, she had noticed that something was wrong, but she did not fall to defeat in regards to her own safety. Watching her every movement-wishing I could do something in case there was a threat – and it was obvious there was some – Bella again surprised me when she began yelling to us to tell her what to do, so she could help us. I wanted so much to ease her worries, but there was nothing I could do. Whoever was behind this had gotten passed Alice ’s vision, but who, how, and why ? Then I saw Bella holding herself against the window seal, and as she did so, she closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, I assumed to calm down trying not to panic.

Slowly, I regained my own control as well as Alice.

I swiftly walked the few feet between us and Bella, as her eyes opened and she fell into my arms. This worried me – what if whoever it was behind this used something else on my love?

“Are you in any pain, Bella?”

“No, I just…feel…strange. My head is buzzing.”

Alice, still unrelieved as to what just happened, decided to tell me her thoughts instead so we did not worry Bella any more than necessary. Alice was heavily shaken, but wanted to discuss this later and felt that we needed to move fast to get back home. I also agreed with her, so we again put Bella on my back and quickly moved out into the forest. Deep in thoughts about the events, there were no words from any of us while running. When we broke through the trees to our back yard, Emmett and Jasper were there to meet us. Jasper wanted to talk right away, but Alice calmed him enough that I could go upstairs with Bella.

When we entered my room, she gulped as she saw my new queen sized bed in the middle of the room – smoothly covered with several layers in distinct shadows of white to light grey, tone in tone with the walls, made of dark wood with dark to light brown spots of Tarsia.

I reassured her that this will be hers, and I would stay downstairs to talk with my family, and gently put Bella in for her to rest. I pulled the quilt over her delicate shaped body and was about to leave, when she shyly asked if I would like to stay with her. When I hesitated to answer, she sat up almost too quick for a human and wrapped her thin arms around me, pleading for me not to leave her.

There was only one way to respond to this…I gradually lifted her chin until she could look directly into my eyes and told her “Bella, love - I will never leave you.” I said as sincere as I possibly could. The talk with my family would have to be put on hold for now.

I lifted the other side of the quilt and laid beside her, she was at my side at once. Bella pulled her hair back and curled her body into mine. Her breathing became more intense as she inhaled my scent, and she dragged herself closer to me. Well, that was not too bad – I carefully caressed her soft flowing hair, inhaling myself her floral aroma, starting to daze over it while again wondering somewhere in the very back of my head why it was that simple to hold her without the thirst.
