Draco ran past his father, taking stride after stride towards the grand doors of the restricted library.  With each step he took, he felt more and more confident that he could succeed.  He would save Hermione, despite the fact that doing so meant giving her up for good.

Draco could feel his father's footsteps close behind him, followed by the footsteps of his friends; surely just along for the chase.  Despite the fact that they were hot on his trail, he ran, unwavering, towards the only girl that he'd ever loved.  Each step brought him closer, and Draco found himself rapidly approaching the library entrance.

Hermione was pacing back and forth in the library, her head spinning, searching for ways to escape. Her thoughts were interrupted by the grand library doors bursting open to reveal Draco and his father both running in her direction.  Lucius shot a curse at Draco in hopes of knocking him out of the way.  Hermione screamed his name, terrified that Draco would be injured; on her account at that.  Draco was warned of his fate by Hermione's shriek, and leaped out of the way- the curse narrowly missing his head- falling to the floor in a crumpled heap.  As he fell, there was a loud crunching of bone, and Hermione winced as it sounded.  It was clear that he'd broken something in the fall, and he wasn't getting up any time soon.  Lucius and his entourage realized their opportunity, and curses began flying at Hermione from all directions.  She was able to dodge most of them, but as the death eaters drew in, she could run from them no longer.  Things started to get blurry.  Time itself slowed down.  She heard Lucius begin to utter the killing curse, and glanced solemnly at Draco, to find him scrambling to his feet despite his limp, lifeless arm (which had undoubtedly broken in his fall).  He ran, not towards Hermione, but towards his father.  Once he'd gotten close enough, he rammed his shoulder and functioning arm into his father, knocking him to the floor.  His tactic was smart, and for the most part effective, but to no avail.  By the time Lucius was knocked off his feet, the curse had already been sent flying.  There was nowhere for Hermione to go.  With one last thankful look at Draco, Hermione closed her eyes and braced herself, for she knew she wouldn't be opening them again.

First off, I want to apologize for this chapter being kind of short, but secondly, I want to address the elephant in the room... I know, I know, not the happy ending you wanted, but let me just tell you we are nowhere near the end of the story. It took me a while to figure out how I wanted this part to read, but, now that I have fine tuned it, I can start publishing some other chapters that I wrote in advance.

You've reached the end of published parts.
