Chapter Five

Hermione sat, locked in the library of Malfoy Manor with no wand, and no way out.  Never in her life had Hermione Granger been so unhappy to find herself in a library.  Right now, all she could really do was hope.  Hope that Draco really meant what he'd said to her earlier.  Hope that he could get to Harry, Ron, and Ginny in time.  Hermione wasn't fond of playing the part of "damsel in distress", but at this point, there really wasn't much she could do.  She had been stripped of her wand, and Lucius Malfoy had meant no joke when he told her trying to escape would mean instant death.   She knew better than to try to explore the surely trap-filled prison she was unwillingly residing in.  Aware of the circumstances of her present situation, Hermione took some time to reflect on the conversation she'd shared with Draco earlier that evening.  When they talked, Draco had been so open and kind to her.  She honestly couldn't believe that he'd been the same Draco Malfoy that had taunted her for the majority of her life.  He'd even helped her hide from Lucius, despite the fact that it could have meant him incredible punishment.  And, although it was only a short while that he could hide her, in that short while, Draco and her had such a wonderful conversation.  They talked about their plans after school, they years past, and even briefly discussed the events of the war. Draco had apologized to her often in the discussion, and he couldn't have been any more sincere about what he said. Hermione and Draco were getting along so well, she must have stopped thinking before she spoke. She let spill so many things that she never would have told him a few days ago. Hermione had even let something slip that she had yet to tell even Ron.  She'd been planning to tell him the next morning, but quite clearly she'd not gotten her chance.  Hermione didn't yet know how she would get out of the Manor, but she'd done it before, and she was sure she could do it again. She had always figured a way out in the past, and she had no intention of ruining her streak just yet.

Draco sat, still in the hidden corridor off his father's study, wondering how long it would take Harry, Ginny, and Ron to get to the Manor. He also wondered how long he had until his father's friends would arrive. It should be any minute now for either of the parties, and the outcome of tonight could quite possibly come down to which one arrived first. No sooner than the thought entered his mind had Draco heard his father's Death Eater friends arrive in he parlor by floo. He had to go try to stall them, and hope that Harry and the others would arrive soon. As Draco made his way to the parlor, Lucius and his friends exchanged greetings and began to discuss their post-war plans. Most of them didn't seem to have thought much about it. After all, most of them had thought that the Dark Lord would reign, and that quite clearly was not what happened. Draco arrived just as the group began to run out of ideas for small talk - not a moment too soon. "Ah, Draco, will you show our guests their way to the library? I have lifted the enchantment so you can let them in. I'm going to grab some refreshments then meet you there myself" said Lucius, nearly giddy with excitement.
"Father, may I speak to you briefly? Alone please?"
Lucius followed Draco into the kitchen and waited impatiently for his son to begin speaking. "Father, why do you intend to torture her? The war is over. There is no reason for you to do this any longer! She has never done anything to you, you can't possibly consider going through with all of it?"
Draco saw his father consider his words, but only for a moment before he began his reply, "Draco, Listen to yourself! What has come over you? She is a mudblood, nothing more. What difference does her life make to you?"
"All the difference father"
With that, Draco sped out of the kitchen and ran, feet pounding to the library. With his father's enchantment lifted, he might be able to get Hermione out before Harry, Ron or Ginny even get here. Maybe, just maybe, he told himself, he could save her in time.

Happy New Year! Thanks for waiting so long for a new chapter, but I have been writing a lot lately, and I should have at least another two chapters or so up very soon.  I know the plot is sort of slow moving right now, but I'm really trying to build up some tension. Something big is about to happen, and if you want to find out what it is you'll just have to keep reading!
