Kate's POV
I watch as Jack dances with the adorable little girl on the dance floor. Stop getting distracted, Kate! You need to finish this so you don't get fired! I think to myself, averting my eyes and focusing them back onto the page of my journal.
I begin to write.
It is my second night on the RMS Titanic, and I am very intrigued by the fantastic hospitality of the White Star Line's staff. I believe that I should be focusing more on the 3rd class portion of the ship though. There are already many personal accounts about the 1st class section, and I actually do believe the 3rd class life is much more preferable. The 1st class people think of themselves as superior to all, but the 3rd class passengers are very accepting, even to someone like myself.
I believe that I am greatly unprepared. I have spoken to one man since I arrived, and I have learned so much more than I ever could have learned from the history books. I am in awe at the thought of such an amazing opportunity, but I do believe that I should not stray from the rules. I have already told this man of my futuristic decent and I wish that I could go back and shut myself up. But then again, I would have done the same thing all over again if I could.
I watch as this man dances with the cutest little girl! I wish that I could talk with her, but I wouldn't wish to intrude on their good time. I also hope that Jack does not ask me to dance, for I am a horrible dancer. I was never taught, and, at a time like this, some lessons would have been nice. Luckily, as I have been watching, I have learned the basic footwork that the people seem to have memorized. I still think that if I tried them though, I would fall on my face and run away with embarrassment.
"Hello."
I glance up from my work to see the little girl tugging at my skirt, Jack resting his hands on her tiny shoulders.
"Hi! Who might you be?" I ask, turning away from my work and smiling down at her.
"My name is Cora. Uncle Jack and I were just dancing."
"I saw. You are a very good dancer, Cora. I'm Kate," I reply, shaking her small hand.
Jack bends down so that he is eye-level with Cora. "I'm going to dance with her now, alright?"
"Oh no! I wouldn't want to ruin your fun," I say, shaking my head.
"You wouldn't ruin it! Common!" He grabs my hand, pulling me out of my chair. "We're gonna have to get a little closer." I feel him pull me to him, closing the gap between us.
"Jack," I whisper, biting my lip. "I don't know how to dance."
"Well, I don't know this dance either, but we can just follow what the other people do."
"No, Jack." I'm still whispering. "I've never danced before. Ever. I have no idea how."
His eyebrows furrow as he thinks this through. Suddenly, he begins smirking.
"Uh oh. What's that face for? I know that face. You're up to something," I say, narrowing my eyes, and jabbing a finger into his chest.
He just smiles. Before I know what is happening, he lifts me off the ground and gently places my feet on his. Luckily, I'm wearing flats that Mrs. Maggie gave me instead of those dreadful heels.
"Problem solved," he says with a simple shrug. I laugh and he begins moving to the happy, exciting tune that the small band plays. I am unfamiliar with about half of the instruments. I weave my arms around his neck to keep my balance. We cross the dance floor with the same rhythm of the rest of the dancers. My instincts are telling me to stop, but I can't help but enjoy myself.
