It's been only a week since I kind of took in Midnight, well Ravi and I. She stays with both of us and sometimes in the morgue office when both of us are too tired to take her home with one of us. I've been mothering her for a while, the only visions I've been having are happy ones where Midnight is playing with or just cuddling her mother. Unfortunately, the brains have started to wear off, meaning I'll have a whole new personality from the body that was just rolled in, a man who was found beaten up and left for dead in a dumpster behind a Chinese place. Clive has asked me to help him on this case, meaning no more motherly affection for Midnight.
"Multiple blows to the head, too small to be from a club or a bat, judging from the few shallow wounds on the head here and there, I'd say...crowbar. An inch in diameter and it was the straight end," Midnight says, "he was still alive before being thrown in the dumpster, the last wound on the back of the head was from hitting the side of the dumpster. That was the killing blow, forced his head forwards and snapped his neck."
"Wow, you certainly know your stuff," Ravi says as he looks at the corpse's head, "You are absolutely right, that's amazing."
"Where did you learn to identify wounds like that?" I ask.
"My dad taught me, I'm actually certified to work in a morgue because of my dad, he got me a work permit and taught me everything there is to know," she says.
"Wait, you're certified to work in a morgue?" Ravi asks.
"Yeah, I actually had a job back at where he worked, I'd get paid every month just like him and that was my allowance," she explains, "but it was only through him so I kind of had to quit because I had no way to get there after he died."
"Wow, that is some pretty heavy stuff," I say right before Clive walks down.
"Oh good, you're all here," he says.
"I'll just be in the office," Midnight says and starts to leave but stops when Clive speaks again.
"No, this is actually about you," he says then looks at Ravi, "I just found out that she used to have a real job back at the morgue on the other side of the city, I was wondering of you'd give her a job here. She needs to make a living, she can't live off of her limited inheritance forever and she refuses to go to an orphanage. What do you say?"
"We'll she's already proven her skills," Ravi replies then looks at the girl, "If you want then the job is yours."
She smiles, "Smokin'! I promise to be out of your hair soon, I'll get a cheap apartment somewhere so you don't have to share your homes anymore," she says.
"Oh, Midnight, happy 16th birthday," Clive says before leaving.
