Midnight hummed with a smile as she entered the morgue for work, "Vacation, meaning more work at a paying job," she chuckled, "is it weird that I like working in a morgue better than..." she trailed off as she looked around. "I am alone so either they punched out early or they're at a crime scene and I didn't get the notice," she said to herself as she hung up her bag and coat before slipping on a clean lab coat.
A body got rolled in and Midnight showed her papers before she took it and unzipped the bag, recoiling in disgust at the stench that hit her in the face, she coughed a bit and tried waving the smell away.
"Ugh..." she sighed, "okay, lady, I'm going to get you ready on a table and wait for the others to get back," she grumbled and got the body prepped for the autopsy. She had time to wash up and eat her lunch before we arrived."Midnight, how long have you been here?" I asked as I got on my lab coat.
She looked at the time, "Little over an hour," she said and brought over a clipboard, "Mrs. Mayhood came in earlier and I got her ready then I just waited on you to get back," she handed the clipboard to Ravi, "I already took inventory of her belongings, there were indentations on her left wrist which suggests she had bracelets on that were likely stolen but the thief-slash-killer got caught in the act and fled before he finished stealing her things, lady was decked out in gold and diamonds," she said.
"Very good detective work," Clive said as he walked down the steps, "once you get a little older, you'd make a great detective or investigator or something like that."
"I'm good working in the morgue, I don't do well with...live people," Midnight said."Cause of death: strangulation... and drug overdose?" I asked in confusion as I looked at Midnight's report, "Why do you think it was both?"
"Well there was a high level of ibuprofen in her system, a common pain killer, but these were overdose high levels, she was strangled at the same time. I believe that she took a couple pills from a stranger for her pain but these pills were a much higher concentration than over-the-counter medicine, she went to the bathroom because she was feeling a bit sick, the killer got tired of waiting so they entered with her and finished the job by strangling her, stealing some of her things but they heard someone enter so they fled. The guys that brought her in said she'd been found in a bathroom stall, the janitor was the one who discovered the body, he'd already cleaned everything except that last stall so he most likely cleaned up the crime scene unintentionally," Midnight shrugged as she continued cleaning the table, "that's my theory but the fact is, she was already dying from the overdose, the strangulation finished the job. Someone had a grudge."
"Very perceptive, Midnight, good girl," Ravi patted her head and she gave him a look.
"Chakrabarti, your head pat privileges have been revoked until you pay me back, you owe me twenty-five dollars for that outfit you ruined with your blue solution, I'm still upset about that. Money or new outfit of similar value then you get forgiven," she said then looked at me, "Oh, almost forgot, did you solve that Melissa case yet with Clive?"
I sighed, Ravi slinked off to his office, "Not yet, party girl brain is not focused enough for it, I've had one vision so far and that was just of the best friend laughing at something Melissa did not find funny."
"Hmm, what if I told you that I may have possibly found the murder weapon?" I listened close, "I told Clive about it just a little while ago when he was down here, he said he'd check it out," she finished cleaning and took off her bloody gloves, throwing them out, "I was on my way to work from school and I passed an alley way after taking a wrong turn, I was going down the street Melissa's house is on and I paused at an alley behind a night club, the light caught something shiny so I went to investigate, guess what I found."
"A lost locket?" Ravi guessed then we both gave him a look and he got a little defensive, "she said guess."
Midnight shook her head, "A bloody glass ball that was broken in half, I didn't grab it because I didn't have my gloves or any evidence bags to put the halves in and I didn't want to compromise the evidence so I left it, planning to tell Clive when I got here since it was his case, someone said he was out so I figured I'd wait to tell him. He's probably got him and at least one other person checking out the place I told him so all we have to do is wait."Footsteps came down the stairs a minute later and Clive showed his face, "Hey guys."
"Speak of the devil," Midnight chuckled and walked around the table.
"Thanks for the tip, Midnight, look what was found in the alleyway you passed," he held up an evidence bag with the halves inside, "ladies and gents, I give you the murder weapon used in the Melissa Crow case. Now all we have to do is find the killer, we've got a few suspects so, Liv, you free?" he asked and leaned against the wall with his black-gloved fist resting on the wall.
I gasped and froze up, Midnight waved a hand in front of my face, "Huh, so this is what she looks like when she has a vision," she said and waited a couple seconds before I relaxed and panted softly, "Welcome back."
"What'd you see?" Clive asked as he walked closer.
I sighed, "Some guy was interrogating her and he just looked pissed, asking where something was," I said.
"Well then what do you say to seeing if any of our suspects match your vision? If not then you can meet with Jimmy and have him sketch who you saw," Clive said.
"Let's go," I took off my lab coat and tossed it with the other dirty ones before following Clive.
