CHAPTER 7

“Why Me?”

Elizabeth ran around the house busily cleaning up. John had gone to work early that morning and she had just dropped James off at school. So now she had time to clean up without any disturbance. She bent over the sink to start loading the dishwasher when the doorbell rang. Looking at the clock on the wall it read twelve thirty; who could be knocking at her door she thought. She walked to the living room and opened up her door to see her best friend Sara, her sister Lexi and none other then Greg standing on her porch.

“What are you guys doing here?” she asked curiously.

“Lunch!” Lexi piped up and pushed passed her into the living room.

“If you’re annoyed blame Lexi, it was her idea.” Sara said and walked through.

“Hey Mrs. Xavier. I would go with Sara on blaming Lexi.” He chuckled.

“Hey Greg and how many times do I have to tell you it’s Liz.” She laughed.

She closed the door behind him and they walked to the kitchen where Sara and Lexi were emptying out two paper bags.

“So why the sudden need to have lunch with me?” Elizabeth asked Lexi. “And how did you know I was home?”

“I knew you were off today and John told me you were staying home to clean. And do I need a reason to have lunch with my favorite sister?” Lexi asks holding a Chinese food container out to her.

She took it and sat it down. “Lexi, I am your only sister.” She said matter-of-factly.

“Exactly, more reason to have lunch with you.” Lexi responds pointing her spoon at her.

Elizabeth shook her head at her sister’s crazy logic and turned her attention to the other two. “So Greg, if you’re here where’s my husband?”

“Well I’m not in Delta Company anymore; they moved me to Charlie so I can fly fulltime. But there was a meeting for all company commanders with the Big Honcho up at headquarters. So I’m guessing that’s where he is.” Greg replied.

“Oh yeah, he text me earlier about that. I just forgot.” She said.

“And Sara, Aren’t you suppose to be working?” she asks her best friend.

“Mahum…boasdlettmeiofays.” Sara mumbles, her mouth full of food.

“Uh swallow and then English.” Liz said laughing.

“I said I’m done for the day. I showed my last client houses early this morning and I’m free for the rest of the day.” She says after swallowing her food.

Elizabeth turned her attention back to her sister, who was feeding a carrot to Greg. “Ugh, You two.” She laughed. Her sister had been going out with Greg since Thanksgiving. She found out on New Years when they came over to her house for the party she threw. It was weird seeing her sister so dedicated to someone when she was a major player. She had thought it was just a fling but it was now February; three months since Thanksgiving. That was a record for her sister and she was happy for her and Greg.

“So are you going to tell me exactly why you’re here? Apart from wanting to have lunch with me so desperately.” She rolled her eyes in sarcasm.

“Well…” Lexi pipes up; a smile on her face. “I was thinking that we should all go up to Las Vegas in May for my birthday. Well our birthday and spend a week up there.”

“Aww Lexi, I doubt that’s going to happen. For one James can’t go and two John can’t be away from work since he’ll be busy training for their deployment to Iraq later this year.” She said hoping her sister wouldn’t be too upset.
