Mia flicked her tail up. Water came pouring down in cascades of transcendent rainbows. The sun shown brightly on the ocean, warming everything it touched. Mia giggled as she broke through the surface like an elegant bird, diving back in with a big splash.
Waves crashed upon the shore as Rayna watched the mermaid frolic in the sea. Her quiver and bow resting on the rock beside her. Rayna closed her eyes and rested her head.
"Being the protector of a royal wizard can be pressing work, but when they are this cute who can complain." Annette walked out from behind a cluster of trees.
Rayna instinctively reached for her weapon at the startling voice, rolling her eyes when she registered who was there. " what do you want Annette?"
"I mean look at her." She gestured to the approaching silhouette of a fair skinned beauty. Mia was just that beautiful. She was thin but still plump. Ivory skin and freckles dotted her face, shoulders and chest as was unique to the royal family. Outstanding eyes the color of massive emeralds, full cheeks and when she smiled with her slight dimple, it was enchanting.
Mia sprinted up and sat on the other side of Rayna on a cloth, "That was incredible!" she squeezed the ocean out of her thick, curly, red hair letting it dry in the sun.
Rayna regarded her blissful smile as she combed through her hair with her fingers. She conjured a small wind to help her dry. Mia smiled warmly at her. Annette cleared her throat.
"Hi Annette, didn't see you there." Annette bowed her head, "your highness." Mia rose, "please this isn't the palace, you can call me Mia." she slipped on her jeans and t-shirt.
Mia sat, drawing in the sand "I've never asked, why do you brandish a bow if you are an elementalist?" Rayna thought for a moment, "I guess it would be to protect people better. My magical abilities aren't great but I am the best archer in the kingdom."
Annette chimed in," how did you become the protector of the next queen of Ridel with such weak magical abilities?"
Rayna began." well..." Mia interrupted " Because I asked for her." Their heads snapped over to her. Rayna had no idea why she had been chosen. She looked at her quizzically. Mia took a deep, exasperated sigh, " I asked for you because I saw it. When I finally got my shapeshifting abilities I was sent a vision of my future in a dream. You were there by my side when I became queen. I asked my father to take you and your family in and for you to become my protector." She smiled warmly.
Rayna looked listlessly at the waves. 10 years ago she and her family moved into a wing of the palace. That's when she started her archery and magic training. She struggled with it and received much ridicule from the other children. Arlen her instructor said that if she wanted to be a good protector of the next queen she had to be better. She had gone to the armory that day and asked to try a weapon , that's when she discovered her natural ability in archery. It's also when she met Mia.
Mia was so kind and charismatic. They became friends easily and by the time they reached 10 they were inseparable. Rayna snapped out of her reverie and looked at Annette and Mia who were chatting about something. Mia was her bestfriend in the world, Annette wasn't so bad either, she was glad to have them both.
