"and here's to your first week of being a teacher" Scout said raising her glass. I clinked mine with hers and rubbed my temples.
"Teaching alone is hard.. but teaching with your own twins in a class.." i groaned loudly. The kids were at my moms for the night and Scout and I were having a wine and movie night in.
"You were the one that didn't want them separated, and didn't want someone else teaching your kids the basics" she sang. I threw my pillow at her and she dodged it laughing. I joined her and our laughs slowly died down.
"Has.. Mason tried.." she started but i held my hand up. My stomach turned at the sound of my ex's name.
"No.. thank goodness" I said
"I was just curious.. you know the twins birthday is coming.." she said. my heart sank. my babies were turning 5. Since they were born on halloween, I was gonna throw them a halloween party.
"I know.. Have you thought of a costume yet?" i asked, trying to change the subject.
"and your birthday is the next daaaaayyyy" she sang. i rolled my eyes. I never liked focusing on my birthday anymore
"Costume."
"I'm thinking of being -" she started but then she gasped
"LETS BE LILO AND STICH" she yelled. I bit my lip to keep from smiling. thanks to Scout, my kids were disney fiends.
"Please Lai.. oh my gosh. you can be lilo. you can wear her HULA OUTFITTTTTTT" she said. I could tell she wasn't gonna let this go.
"Fine" I said. Belle wanted to be a ballerina, but she wanted her outfit to be a North West inspired one (Yes my child keeps up with the kardashians with me I know it's sad) and Emmett wanted to be the Suicide Squad Joker. She simmered down, and began playing with her wine
"you know.. it's been what.. almost 3 years since you've been out on a date.." she said. i looked up and furrowed my brows together.
"bitch you've been single for like 9 years" i said. She laughed and rolled her eyes.
"by choice. i like being able to do as i please.. but.. Lai you're so busy being a mom.. you've forgotten how to do you.. you deserve to be happy.. since Mason.. you've clammed up.. you weren't like this.." she said. I shifted in my seat and sighed.
"My main concern is my kids Scout.. always has been.." i said
"and always will be.. but girl.. come on.. you're losing your touch. you dress like a -" she started and scrunched up her nose
"a mom.. but like a 49 year old one" she said. I smiled a little and rolled my eyes
"tomorrow.. we're going shopping. new hair wardrobe nails.. everything. you're getting. back out there" she said. i sighed, knowing there was no way of stopping her. Fear flowed through me. I had become so closed in, so afraid.. of him.
"stop being afraid.. Lai be you.." she said. i bit my lip and nodded
"fine.." i agreed.

The next day, we donated literally all of my clothing, and hit the mall. we bought tops, dresses, pants, skirts, shoes, boots, NEW MAKEUP. I finally got a new phone and all. I got my hair styled and nails done. I felt complete. I felt like my 18 year old self creeping back in.
and i loved it
my mom brought the kids home that night.
"Mommy i love your hair!" Belle squealed. it was straightened, which was a change from my curls in a top knot.
"Thank you!" i responded. Emmett was unbothered and ran over to scout.
"You look great Lai" my mom said. i gave her a small smile a mouthed a thank you. after feeding the kids, and bathing them we all had a movie night in my room. Belle ran her fingers through my hair, like she always did, and watched me instead of the movie.
"what's up Belle Bee?" i asked.
"Mommy.. you're my hero." She whispered. My eyes watered and i kissed her head
"Thank you.." i whispered. she snuggled up next to me, and continued to watch the movie. I softly wiped my eyes, and started running my fingers through her onyx curls (which she had gotten from me). Emmett looked up at me, his green eyes which were identical to his father and sisters, full of exhaustion. He crawled to the other side of me, and fell right asleep. I ran my fingers through his dark brown waves and stared at the screen. Scout had passed out at the end of my bed, which was honestly nothing new. Belle continued to watch the movie, and before i knew it, she was asleep as well. After turning everything off, I made myself comfortable. Emmett on my left, Belle on my right, and Scout at the end of my bed. I kissed Belle and Emmett's heads before shutting my eyes, and trying to fall asleep. My thoughts became a pool. Mason flashed into my head. Yelling.. things like that.. the twins popped in my head.. my students.. especially Bria. she was becoming one of my favorite students. She was shy.. she looked like once you broke her out her shell, that was it. I made a mental note to give her an invitation to the kids party. My thoughts soon faded away, and i drifted off to sleep.
