The next morning, Rick healed well and was being shown the ropes on how to kill the walkers. All of the walkers from last night have wandered off and it was quiet.
"Are we sure they're dead?" Rick asked as they walked out the front door with a baseball bat in his hands. "I have to ask at least one more time."
"They dead, except for something in the brain," the man answered walking behind him. "That's why it's got to be the head."
They slowly approach a walker that's sitting on the front fence like a passed out drunk person. It wakes up and turns to them and walks to them, growling. Rick swings his baseball bat to the walker's skull hard. Seeing not much damage being done, he strikes more blows to it's head till it dies. He dropped the bat and fell to his knees.
"You all right?" asked the man.
"I need a moment." He said without looking at him. Rick never killed a man without much of a reason. He is still not used to this large change in the world. It's hard to adjust to something this big.
They make their way to Rick's house and walk inside.
"They're alive-- my wife and son," he said. "At least they were when they left"
"How can you know?" asked the man, following him into the kitchen with his son right behind him. "By the look of this place--" "I found empty drawers in the bedroom" Rick interrupted him. "They packed some clothes. Not a lot, but enough to travel."
"You know anybody could've broken in here and stolen clothes, right?"
"You see the framed photos on the walls?" Rick said and the man looked around seeing nothing on the walls. "Neither do I," he said, not giving him a chance to answer. "Some random thief take those too, you think? Our photo albums, family pictures-- all gone."
The man starts to laugh and pulls out a chair to sit down. "Photo albums" he laughed. Rick was confused. The man looks up at Rick and his laugh turns to tears. "My wife... Same thing. There I am packing survival gear, she's grabbing photo albums" He takes a deep breath and blinks back the tears. After a moment of silence, the man's son walks forward.
"They in Atlanta, I bet," said the boy.
"That's right," he replied.
"Why there?" Rick asked.
"Refugee center. A huge one they said before the broadcast stopped. Military protection, food, shelter. They told people to go there. They said it'd be safe." the man said. "Plus they got that disease place" his son added.
"The Center for Disease Control. Said they were working out how to solve this thing."
Rick turned and walked to the cabinet and grabbed a set of keys.
