I was jerked awake when the horse suddenly stood up neighing. Pulling Jenny up and giving her the 9mm. She looked wide awake and terrified.
The horse threw its head up before running off in a direction.
“Crap.” I muttered and pulled jenny closer, “Pack quickly.”
She dropped to her knees shoving everything in the bags. I heard a stick break making me jerk my arm to the right and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
There was a howl of pain and that is when it happened. More than 10 wolves jumped at me. Knocking Jenny away I threw up my arms shooting as quickly as possible.
I was knocked away and into a tree. I felt a searing pain in my chest making me gasp looking down. Coughing up some blood I saw I had claw marks across the upper part of my chest going down my shoulder.
I heard a scream and as I looked up I saw Jenny’s stomach get de-bowled.
“NO!” I screamed grabbing my guns and shot.
Killing four in heads shot I scrambled to get to jenny as she collapsed onto the ground. I dropped the guns and grabbed her head, “Jenny, you are going to be ok. Don't cry you are alright.” I told her but found the tears on her cheeks were the ones falling from my face.
She coughed up some blood, “I feel cold.” Jenny wheezed making my heart clench.
Putting my forehead on hers I cried, “You’re fine. You aren't cold. You are just going to sleep. And when you wake up dad is going to make you some hot coco ok?”
She smiled as a tear fell from her eye, “Mom’s so pretty.” She breathed out staring towards me but it was like she was looking behind me.
She stopped breathing making me shake her, “Jenny? Jenny?”
I heard a growl making me slowly set her head down on the ground before grabbing my gun. Wiping my face with the back of my hand I stood up, “Come on you bastards.” I hissed
I looked up and they ran at me. I didn't care for my bleeding chest at the moment; all I cared for was a bullet in their heads. All of them were dead besides the last one standing 30 feet from me.
I pulled the trigger but saw I was out of bullets. The beast ran at me as I fell to my knees. I was done. Without jenny I had no more will to live. I was supposed to protect her and I failed.
It seemed as if timed slowed down as the beast got near. My heart and brain raced but the beast seemed to be slow as a nail. I guess this is what they say your life flashes before your eyes. I could see it. I could see mom when she used to pet my hair before bed. I could see when dad actually smiled and cared for me. I could see when Jenny was first born. I could see when Jenny first started to walk and how I taught her how to speak and do things… I could see it all and it played like rapid images.
As it came to a stop I found the beast was in mid hair a foot or so away from me ready to grip my neck with his powerful jaws. My eyes fell shut and time caught up.
Upon heard a painful whimper noise I opened my eyes to see the black horse stomping on the wolf. He slammed his hooves down and down again until the wolf stopped moving.
After the beast had a huge dent where his back was the horse snorted then trotted to me. He snorted and pushed against my head. Grabbing his head I stood up and he moved to Jenny.
He snorted hitting her head soft but hard enough to make her head roll to the side.
Tears filled my eyes and I grabbed the bags next to her. They were slightly covered in her blood but not too bad.
