I opened my eyes and saw Brie on her hands and knees, scrubbing the kitchen floor. I stood and leaned in the doorway.
She turned and smiled.
"I thought I could feel someone watching me."
"Same here."
"What do you mean?" She asked as she stood up.
"I felt you climb into my bed last night. What was that about?"
"What are you talking about? You came out and got me. At least... thats what I thought happened."
"No, I don't move once I'm asleep. Not a sound."
"Not a sound? Are you kidding? You snore like a bear, and talk like you got blanket immunity." She laughed and tied a trash bag closed.
"It looks pretty good in here. For the work of a liar."
"A liar? No way. If I was a liar, how would I hear you talking about a note where someone didn't tell you they love you?"
"Oh. I guess I do talk in my sleep. But you did get into the bed on your own. And I'm a cuddler."
"Yeah, you almost crushed my ribs. Anyway, sorry about that. I'm not used to sleeping alone, I guess."
"I'm very used to it. Any way, I don't mind. Like I said, I'm a cuddler."
She smiled awkwardly and laughed.
"Anyway, I gotta go for a little while. But first!" I ran out the door to call for Ron.
I called his name, followed by, "Get your beer stealin' ass over here!"
He came out of his trailer.
"I'm here, Trevor!"
"Come on, I got someone for you to meet." We walked into the trailer. "Brie. This is Ronald. He is my associate, and neighbor You can call him Ron for short. Ron, this is Briella, you can call her Brie for short. All good?"
Ron spoke quickly. "Nice to meet you, Brie. I'm Ron Jakowski."
"I know you! You have that talk show on the radio!"
"You've heard my show?" He smiled.
"I love that show! So informative. That show is like a public service."
"Thank you, Brie. Not everyone appreciates the truth. Like the last girl T had around here." I growled at him. "Anyway... Is there anything you don't want me to tell her?"
I laughed nervously. "No. Brie can know anything she wants to know. We are roommates now!"
"I'm gonna want to hear about that note at some point, Trevor!" She laughed.
"The one from Ath-" Ron stopped talking as I stared him down.
Trevor grabbed his keys from the counter, and smiled at Ron. "Thanks for restocking the beer, friend."
"Of course, T. I'm sorry."
"Come on, Ron. We got that stuff to pick up. Need anything while we are out, Athen-" I stumbled on my words but caught myself. "Briella. Need anything Briella?"
"Trash bags, please." She looked nervous to ask. I was glad she didn't.
I smiled and replied, "You got it! See you later. Need anything else, text me. Ronald, give Briella my number. I'll be in the truck.
I went out in the truck and slammed my head on the steering wheel, praying it would knock me out and kill me. But it didn't"
Ron ran to the truck. "Trevor! You might hurt yourself."
"I want to. I really really want to."
"It was a slip up. She asked who Athena is. I didn't say."
"It's okay, Ron. I'll tell her later."
If I can tell her. I couldn't think about Athena without it causing me to zone out. Now wasn't the time for that. I drove away from the trailer, knowing that Brie had her face pressed against the glass, and watched me pull away.
