Prologue

I woke up with a long and heavy sigh. I lazily held my hand up to protect my puffy eyes from the deadly rays of the sun that was currently seeping through my closed windows. According to the alarm clock, I had only gotten less than four hours of sleep. It was all the sleep my current situation would allow me.

When I had accomplished my daily morning routine, I decided to make my way downstairs. It became a tradition to conceal face by applying foundation under my baggy eyes every morning. This was the only strategy that I could thought would hide the fact, from others, that I was deprived of sleep.

When I arrived at in the kitchen, I was surprised to see that my father and my mother were already downstairs preparing pancakes together. I sat on a stool and waited for them to notice me. I could tell that they were worried about me but nothing could make me change my mind. Not now anyway.

My parents are respected people. The pack and the community loved them. They reigned for only twenty years over Alphas and wolves but they have made a huge difference to the entire community in that short time. They ruled with not only passion, but with love and confidence for their people. I am proud to call them my parents.

I desperately wanted to be like them. I knew my duties and I have always made the pack my first priority. They were distant from me these days but I knew why they were. So, it was okay. I was the perfect role model but now children won't even look at me. I tried blaming my appearance but I knew it was much more than that. My story would have made the first page in any newspaper. The one and only princess had denied her mate.

I desperately wanted to make this pack proud but there was no way of going back now. The Rialaithe pack had no respect for their princess anymore. They only held shame for her.

I thought about the years that I had continuously slaved myself in order to gain respect. I was a woman and that made it more than difficult to achieve. At a certain point in my life, I was the sole ruler while my parents were given a short break. I had definitely made people proud. I put endless labour to prove that I deserved my title but everything that I had built was gone now. Nothing was left. All the respect was gone.

"Morning" my dad bluntly said.

I didn't reply. No, I couldn't reply. I was ashamed because my father was disappointed and I was the reason why. I cause it. Me! He tried to hide it but it was difficult. I held my tears and nodded in reply.

"How was your night, princess" It was my Mother who asked.

"Fine" I replied, lying in the process.

"Alpha Xavier called again" my Father stated joining in the conversation.

I sighed in frustration. My 'mate' called every morning in order to make sure that I was doing well. I didn't find the point. I didn't know him. I had actually only spoken one word to him in my entire life and that was merely a month ago. So, why does he care? As long as I was away from him I would be more than 'fine'.

I looked up to see my parents looking at me eagerly. I just realized that they wanted a response. What should I say? I was slightly scared. I knew they loved me but I was frightened of the topic of my 'mate'. I wondered when they would stop pestering me. I was eighteen, which meant I was old enough to make my own decisions.
