A Shadow's Chance

Ths new girl

It turns out sprinting down a hardwood hallway might cause you to run into someone. My bad. My feet slipped out from underneath me, causing me to go flying through the air in a arrow like fashion, head first into a really soft wall. A groan came from underneath me as I opened my eyes. Under me was Nico, looking up at me with wide eyes and red cheeks.

"Um Chase?" He asked quietly, not quite meeting my eyes,"are you okay? That was a nasty fall."
Did he just seriously ask if I was okay? Only then did I realize the position I was in. I was practically straddling him at the hips with him laying on the hallway floor. I quickly jumped up, using the railing to pull myself up.
"Me? I practically crushed you like a stampede!" I exclaimed
"Well yeah. I'm fine though." He practically whispered as I held out my hand to help him up. His scarf was now laying near the doorway where Leo vanished into. He grabbed my hand and I boasted him up.

"We should probably follow Leo." I smiled lightly him. I picked up the scarf of the ground and handed it to him.
"Damn this is soft." I muttered, not realizing he could hear me.
"It's 100% Pashmina." He said, taking it back from me before opening up the door where Leo was. As me and Nico entertained I noticed it was a waiting room, where Sam, Leo and Ryder all sat in some chairs, talking quietly. There was a door at the end of the room that doctors kept going in and out of, seemingly in a hurry. I sat down beside Sam as Nico say across from me.

"So how does this all work?" I asked the group, wondering how the whole 'a person that was in the hospital 1000 miles away and dead is now here and alive' thing worked.
"Well from what I can tell he feels it when someone dies from Shadow more then any other death, so he goes and looks around and pulls them out. They kinda just appear here, I'm not sure how it works. There body is still in the casket or whatever but they have a new one is created." Ryder answers, turning to look at me.
"Wow something intelligent came out of his mouth!" Sam said in fake surprise.
"Oh shut up." Muttered Sam, moving away from Sam a little.
"Wait, so she or he is just going to appear? When do we get to meet them?!" I asked, getting excited.
"Well usually Oliver gets fist dibs since he raised them but sometimes others do it. Like for Nico we were worried he couldn't hear since he was so quiet so we all had to learn sign language, but I caught on first and went in. Then he ruined it telling me he's not deaf!" Leo exclaimed, nudging Nico jokingly.
"Sorry I can hear." Nico said sarcastically, nudging Leo back.

A creak came from the door across the room. I looked up to see an exhausted Oliver drag his body over to us before collapsing on the couch.
"I'm so tired." He groaned, burying his face into the pillion beside me. Everyone gave him sympathetic looks.
"How did it go?" Asked Ryder as he handed him a water bottle. Oliver sat up, took a swig of water before talking.
"Well I know one thing. As I was having the flashes I s-" he started before I cut him off.
"Wait, flashes?" I asked.
"They are kinda like the flask backs people have before they die, except I can't see everything, only little bits." Oliver explains, "so as I was saying, this isn't a Nico, she's actually deaf."
"Wait really? Who gets to talk to her?!" Leo said looking around.
"Not me, she tried to run from me, I had to chase her all the way to the light. She nearly went in!" He cried.
"Your fine." Sam said, not looking at him. "Just go take a nap, one of us will talk to her okay?"
He looked at before nodding and getting up, exiting the room. The food made a soft creak as he left toward the way I came from.
"So who here's fluent? I know Chase doesn't know an-" Ryder started before I one again cut someone off.
"I do. I don't know how or why, but I do. I think someone important to me used to be deaf." Everyone look at me with wide eyes before Leo grins.
"So noobie, that means you get to stay up all night with her, good luck." Leo said before dashing out of the room. Sam ran after him, throwing the door open.
"Wait! Stop!" Ryder cried as he too ran out of the door. It's quiet, kinda awkward to be honest. I mean it is just me and mr.shyguy Nico.

"Want me to stay up with you?" He asked do quietly I almost didn't hear. Why would he want to stay up? I questioned.
"If you want. I mean, I appreciate it. Thanks" i swear I sound like a idiot.
"What time do they wake up?" I asked. I really didn't want to wait in her room for 6 hours.
"Anywhere from 2-4 hours. So since it's 9pm now, anywhere between 11pm-1am." He have me a smile after, like he was happy he got to use his weird ass skill. Weird helpful ass skill though.
"Thanks Siri!" I said in a joking tone, cause him to blush.
"Oh shush." He muttered, looking at the ground.

A doctor came in, wait sorry, doctor Paige came in she told me the girl would be awake in 30 minutes or less. Since then I've been in me room by myself, since Nico had to leave. It was fun hanging out with him, he's really funny when you get to know him. Unless he just memorized his sense or humour...

A groan came from across the room, making me snap back to real life. The girl was under all the blankets, so I couldn't get a good look at her. Suddenly, she sat up and looked at me with wife eyes, before falling off the bed.

All done for today! Sorry the first few chapters are gonna be a little boring, since I'm trying to get all the characters a chapter kinda dedicated to them, so you get to know them. So what's you thoughts on the new girl? That's all for now, byyyyeee!!
