CHAPTER 2

The next morning, Sarah blocked out the previous evening's event with work. It was a Saturday, and the small bakery was crowded, to Sarah's satisfaction.Knowing that she was continuing what her parents had started successfully, filled her up with contentment.

In fact, what else could she possibly need in life? She was happy, she had Michael, had Riley, her friends....... she shouldn't need anything else. But she did. All she had would never be enough as long as she didn't have her.

Leanne.

Thoughts like these leaked into her head, however hard she tried to block it out. There always seemed to be an opening in every wall she built around her mind.... where it entered her and filled her up till she couldn't take anything more....

"Sarah? Dear could you hurry up a little, if you can? Little Harry is waiting at home and he's starving for one of your buns." came a voice out of nowhere. Sarah was jerked out of her reverie and berated herself that she was daydreaming at a time like this.

"Oh! Oh I'm so sorry ; you know me Mr Green, my mind is never where i need it to be!" Sarah planted a fake smile o n her face and continued packing up his buns.

Standing near the door of the kitchen, Michael watched her with unwavering amber eyes, which never failed to notice anything out of the ordinary. He definitely noticed that his sister was acting weird since yesterday. And he would definitely find out why. Even if he had to do a little investigating. Which he would.

But for the time being, he would do nothing but keep a close eye on her and make sure she didn't completely lose her mind.

"Thank you! Please come back again!" Sarah said as the last customers for the day left the bakery with a smile on their faces.Taking off her apron, she st down and sighed in relief.

"Whoa! Really crowded today, right Michael? The shelves are nearly empty!" she said with satisfaction.

"Yeah....i guess so. By the way, you seem really tired. No," he said contemplatively, as if mulling over something of utmost importance. "Rather its like you're not here... somewhere else." He purposely said it as a statement; Sarah knew he wouldn't accept denial. She said and assured him,

"Hmm maybe but I'm just a little... overworked i think. Well this wouldn't be the first time, right?" she joked in a light tone and smiled at him. Michael looked at her. The smile didn't reach her eyes; they were dull and empty. He decided to leave his interrogation for another time.

"If that's the case, i think you should rest. Good night and sweet dreams," Michael got up to head for his room, but realized his feet weren't moving. They wouldn't unless he had the answers he was looking for. He cursed himself inwardly for what he was about to do, which definitely wasn't the best thing to do given the circumstances. Michael turned around slowly and took a deep breath.

"Michael?" Sarah's voice was tired, lifeless. He shouldn't ask her, not now!!! But.....

"Sarah, who is Leanne Wrigley? I don't mean to pry, but I saw your letter on the table and I wondered why you didn't post the letter, despite going to the post office. Is she the person who you write to every week?" Seeing Sarah's face collapse, he regretted asking so immediately; but when the questions started coming out, there was no stopping them. Sarah knew that as well as he did. Sarah closed her eyes and tried to pull herself together.

"Well, she's one of my friends, whom I haven't seen in a.....a very long time. We were quite close when we were little, and she had to leave suddenly," her voice cracked. Clearing her throat she gave a small smile, "...and I've been trying to make contact with her, is all. Anyway,"  she lightened her tone ", you should be in bed young man. Someone has got school tomorrow."                         Michael recognized the concealed dismissal and ,wishing her goodnight, retired to bed.

Sarah sat in the armchair for a while, staring blankly at the place where Michael had stood. She knew Michael didn't mean any harm; his conscience  wouldn't have let him sleep otherwise. But still; his question were like daggers through her heart. Or rather instead of making new wounds, they  had reopened old ones.....

Sarah got up with a sigh and went in her bedroom. The first thing that met her eyes was the damned letter on the table. She scolded herself for carelessly leaving it there. She had just given Michael another  thing to worry about; he always over-thought things like these.  He had always been observant and perceptive as a child. Too much for his own good, she thought wryly.

Taking the letter in her hands, her eyes rested on the name inked on the envelope. The name that had given a thousand sleepless nights.... and yet had given so much comfort and assurance once upon a time.

Leanne Wrigley.

Hearing that name, at one point of time, had caused her immense joy... now, it only brought about feelings of sadness, disappointment and a deep deep sense of being incomple

That night she dreamed.....
