CHAPTER 6
A throbbing in her head awoke Sarah. She opened her eyes and the event of the evening came back to her in a rush.
"Leanne!!" she cried out. Despite the constant drumbeat she felt in her head, she threw off her sheets and ran out of the room.
"Leanne? Where are you?Leanne..........Leah...............Leah..............Leanne?" Her mind spun; her sight dimmed. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was Leah running in the room with look of alarm on her face.
When she finally came to, Leah was at her bedside, dozing in her chair. Sarah sat up slowly, so as not to wake her up. Leah's normally tied up her was let loose; the straight brown strands fell softly over her face. She softly brushed them away, and of its own accord, her hand stroked Leah's cheek softly.
Skin as white as candy wrappers, hair the color of chocolate, and her eyes........
Leah chose to open her eyes that moment.Brown eyes stared into Sarah's green ones.
"Umm Sarah," she began in a sleepy voice, "what are you trying to do to my face? Nothing bad I hope?" she continued with a wry smile on her face.
Sarah started and leaned back against her pillows with a sigh.
"Oh nothing," she said dismissively. "Just brushing the hair out of your face" Leah's smile widened
"Right. Okay............"her tone abruptly changed to that of seriousness.
"Will you explain what happened back there? You seemed like a ghost."
Which is partly your fault, you idiot, she scolded herself. Obviously she would have been shocked when she had called her honeybee. The name that was reserved only for one person.......
Sarah's smile was wiped off her face. It was written all over her face that she had hoped with all of her heart that this topic wouldn't come up. but Leah wouldn't let her escape that easily.
"Oh its nothing.....i just rememb - no, you reminded me of .......a friend of mine. It's been a long time since I've seen her, so I was a bit shocked.
Leah's heart was beating like crazy, and her throat was as dry as a bone. She had to swallow several times to ask, "So do you..... where is she, or he, now?"
Does Sarah still remember? Still care.............................still...love?
Sarah replied with a shaky laugh.
"That's the very crux of the matter, my dear. I haven't seen her in seven years. When we were young, we were.........." she paused to clear her throat. "well we were close. No not close...close isn't the word for it at all. We were like....two puzzle pieces that could only fit each other and no one else" Leah took in a deep breath.
Sarah still remembered.
After all this time;.
"Anyway, I felt that she was the only one who understood me. She was the only one who managed to keep me looking forward when I was ready to shut my eyes forever. It was quite ironical actually, since she herself was blind." Sarah had a smile on her face, but it didn't reach her eyes.
Her eyes were flooded with the memories of her past.
Leah's face was an expressionless mask; the effort she took to keep it that way was smoothly disguised. She couldn't let the tears flow, she couldn't let them be seen.
Not now. Not yet.
" One day she just ..............left. She never told me why." her voice now shook with despair.....and anger perhaps. "I remember the last day as if it was only yesterday..."
Sarah didn't mean to let so much out, but once the flow started it wouldn't- no, couldn't stop.
Just like the tears that now trickled down her pale white cheeks.
"We were sitting under my apple tree and eating candies. It was like our own tiny little space. Nothing and no one could disturb us, like there was a spell cast there."Her eyes hardened as did her voice.
"But, one day that spell broke. Her mother called her to come home; dinner was ready and on the table.I didn't mind, because I thought we would definitely meet again the next day. In fact that was how the days would pass by for me." Her voice was reduced to a whisper now.
" When she wasn't there, I was only able to stay happy despite the loneliness," she took a steadying breath, "because of my deep grained belief that she would come to rescue me again. But it's said; beliefs are made to be broken.
When her mother called her that day, something was wrong........she seemed so disturbed.......as if she couldn't make up her mind whether to go or to stay.........."Sarah couldn't say anymore. She didn't need to; Leah was at her limit.......lost in the memories.......she couldn't hold it in anymore.
She patted Sarah's shaking shoulders and said softly said ."Drink this warm milk and sleep. I'm going to go check on Michael."
Without meeting her eyes, she went out and shut the door. Before the tears could rush out, she ran to the restroom and bolted the door after her.
Finally alone, Leah cried her eyes out till the dead of the night.
When she crept out of the restroom in the middle of the night, she went back to her room. As she tiptoed along the dark corridor, she heard a creaking of floorboards behind her. But when she turned, nothing but darkness was there. Another creak. This time she forced herself not to turn around. What are you, a coward? she scolded herself. There is nothing to be scared of !
You should be used to the darkness by now.....
She finally reached her room, and closed the door behind her. Leah switched on the light and gasped.
Michael smiled at her.
"Hello there. I've been waiting for you."
His smile vanished.
"I need answers."
