Izazya's POV
It took me a minute or so to adjust after the collision itself. Joe was now in my car, the windscreen was smashed, and the car was on fire. It took me a few more seconds for me to take it in, to realise we could die right here. And then, I shot into action, undoing my seat belt and pulling Joe - who was now unconscious - into my arms.
"Shit," I mumbled as I fumbled with the lock on the door, trying to get the door open. I could feel the flames against my leg and knew I'd only have a limited amount of time before the flames reached the fuel tank. I shoved the door open and kept it there with my foot, whilst manouvering Joe and myself out of the car carefully. The car was surrounded by a thick blanket of smoke and I began to cough heavily, whilst shoving the door closed and stumbling away from the car, Joe's lifeless body in my arms. I swallowed heavily, coughing again and walking towards the general direction of the school gates. I could hear cries of disbelief, people yelling for help, and others just generally screaming, mainly girls.
"Izazya was in that car!" a girl screamed. No notice for Joe. "And apparently he hit that Joe kid!" there we go, not exactly how I wanted it, but at least they knew who he was, and I was sure they would when we got out of this. I stumbled into the school gates, coughing and spluttering, trying to rid my lungs of the smoke.
"Move out of the way, cousin coming through!" I heard the familiar voice of Sam yell as she barged through crowds of people. "If you haven't already, someone call an ambulance and the fire department!" she snapped at the students, before turning back to me and Joe, giving me a sympathetic look. "Are you okay?" she asked. I nodded slowly, and then looked at Joe. Sam pressed her hand to the side of his neck for a few seconds and I could see her concentrating. She looked at me and said "he's breathing and he's alive, he'll be fine, Izazya." I collapsed to the ground in relief and weakness. I could barely breathe myself. I leaned back on my legs, going into a kneeling position and cradling Joe in my arms.
"I'm so sorry, this wasn't meant to happen, I swear," I whispered, as if he could hear me. I sighed heavily, feeling drowsy, I'd probably hit my head or something and got concussion, that was all. I looked at Sam, who was now knelt in front of me, smiling sympathetically.
"This isn't your fault Izazya, so don't you dare blame yourself." She whispered. I wasn't thinking about that, but now you come to mention it, yes, yes it was my fault.
"I... Was the one who hit... him." I managed to gasp, coughing again. I could hear sirens in the distance, getting closer, and I clung tighter to Joe; I didn't want to let him go.
"Izazya, let go now, come on... Give Joe to me," Sam whispered. I shook my head defiantly, clinging tighter to him.
"He's mine," I hissed at her, moving backwards. The ambulance pulled up and the men came over to us.
"What's wrong?" They asked Sam, before looking at Joe and I.
"I think Izazya's suffering from shock, he's just hit his... friend, Joe. Joe's unconscious but seems to be breathing," I heard Sam explain to them and they looked back at us.
"Go away," I growled. "I can take care of him."
"No, we need to get him to hospital, and you too." They said, their tones harsh. I didn't let go of Joe. The two ambulance men looked at each other. "We'll have to sedate him, he's not going to let go." One said.
"He looks mental." The other said in a hushed tone, both of them going back to the ambulance. I felt Sam grab hold of me, holding me in place.
"It's going to be okay, Izazya, just stay still..." she whispered. I looked at her, feeling the tears well up in my eyes.
"I'm going to lose him," I whispered, unable to do anything else. "I'm going to lose him over a stupid ring." I began to sob, slowly loosening my grip on Joe. I felt Sam try and take him from me and instantly flinched backwards.
"He'll be fine Izazya, just hold still..." She whispered again, her words trailing off as I felt a sharp pain in my left arm. I looked up to see the ambulance men holding my arm and moving away slowly.
"He'll be under in a few minutes, just give it some time."
"No!" I yelled, trying to get to my feet, my vision blurring and my head spinning. I felt Joe be taken from me and I stumbled, Sam catching me before I fell. She guided me back onto the ground and sat with me the whole time whilst I sat there sobbing, slowly losing conscious and in the end, falling to the side, my head on her shoulder. "Sam..." I managed to mumble before I completely lost consciousness.
Joe's POV
I slowly began to regain consciousness, finding it significantly easier to breathe than when I had lost consciousness. I had a sudden flashback, seeing the accident in fast-forward, until the point where I had seen the note and roses burning in the car and then lost consciousness. I moaned, holding my head.
"What the hell," I mumbled, opening my eyes slowly, to a bright light, making me squint. "I'm dead. I knew it. I died and now I'm wherever I am." I heard a laugh beside me. I turned my head to see Jared sat on the chair next to me. Hospital, I was in hospital. I sighed in relief and managed to give him a smile whilst my eyes adjusted.
"I'm not going to lie to you, man. You look horrendous." Jared grinned, patting my shoulder lightly, as if I were breakable.
"Nice way of putting it, way to up my self esteem" I mumbled with a small smile. Jared laughed.
"Well, you're in a better position than Izazya, to say you were the one who was hit." Jared said honestly. I sat up suddenly, making my head spin. I moaned quietly.
"W-what's wrong with Izazya?" I asked, "is he hurt?"
"No, not hurt, far from it physically." Jared answered.
"What do you mean?" I asked again, looking at him, "what's happened?"
"Well, you could say he's a little... Unstable mentally." Jared said slowly, trying to chose his words appropriately.
"Just tell me the fucking problem, Jared." I snapped.
"Well, to put it lightly, he's insane." Jared sighed, shrugging, "they had to sedate him to get him to let go of you, and sedate him again in hospital to get him to stop screaming your name."
"He's unconscious?" I asked, like the idiot I was. Jared nodded once. I sighed heavily. "This is all my fault."
"No it isn't man, it's that idiot that chased you into the road's fault."
"How'd you know about that?"
"I was watching from my classroom."
"It's my fault for challenging him."
"It's his fault for taking it as a challenge."
"Just shut up Jared." I growled in the end. Jared shrugged and stood up. "No, don't go!" I yelled at him, trying to reach for him.
"Visiting hours are over man, I'll see you tomorrow." Jared said with a small wave. I waved back and settled back down in the lumpy hospital bed. I truly didn't know what to do with myself, I wanted to go home, for everything to be okay. I wanted this to be a dream, and I'd just fallen asleep at school, or something stupid. For Izazya to wake me up from this nightmare. I heard yelling from down the hallway and I knew he was awake.
"Joe!" I heard him cry from down the hallway. I winced, knowing I couldn't go to him, I could barely move. "Joe I'm coming!" he yelled, followed by footsteps, someone running, followed by others.
"Get back here!" Someone yelled, obviously falling as there was a thud to follow, but Izazya was still running. I saw him turn the corner and come running down the hospital ward.
"Izazya," I whispered with a small smile, seeing the determination in his eyes as his eyes fell on me. But then, just as I thought he'd make it, a doctor grabbed him by the collar, yanking him backwards. "You idiot." I mumbled, closing my eyes. I knew I wouldn't see him for a while, so I decided to sleep instead; there's nothing else to do around here.
