Coraline sat still on the cave floor, silent tears running down her face. There were so many spots on her leg throbbing in pain now, but at least Conrad had gotten all of the bullets out. With a deep breath, she slowly opened her eyes and looked down.
Conrad was looking up at her with a very worried look on his face. Even though her leg was hurting, she couldn't help the smile that spread across her face as she looked down at the human. He was there for her, and she was just happy to have someone to look after her. Even if she is much taller than him.
"Coraline?" His voice pulled her from her thoughts as she focused back in on the man before her. "Are you alright? I got the bullet holes bandaged just in case, but you still look hurt."
With a frown, Conrad pulled himself up into the child's lap. She had done her best to hold still as he got the bullets out of her leg. Of course, she jerked suddenly a couple of times, but he knew that it must've hurt her pretty badly. His own shoulder was still throbbing as well but he was doing his best to ignore it.
The young giant nodded, actually quite uncertain what to say. While she wanted to tell him how happy she was he was there, she also didn't want him to think she was dumb and run away. "I-I'm okay Conrad. Just thinking I guess."
Carefully she lifted the human up in her hands, shifting so she could lay on her back. And even though he was in her hands, her movement still shook the whole area around him as he gripped onto her finger in fear.
Coraline turned her brown orbs to the human and frowned deeply. "Sorry." She mumbled as she placed him on her stomach, a hand over him gently as he laid there as well.
Closing his eyes, Conrad inhaled deeply. He knows she won't hurt him but the thought of a hand covering more than half of your body is terrifying! He can remember being a kid, and his parents always told him if he was bad the giants would come and take him for a snack. He shuddered at the memory of this, and how much he had tried to be a good kid for his parents, but it was never enough for some reason. They never seemed impressed with him, so he had just given up. And now, even after they're long gone, he's still trying to make choices they would be proud of.
He must've been quiet for quite some time because he felt a large finger nudge him and he looked to see Coraline looking at him with a frown. "Are you okay?" She asked softly as she used a finger to playfully poke his stomach.
With a small 'oof', Conrad chuckled and pushed her finger away. "Yes, I'm fine." He sat up, pushing her finger away from him. "I guess I was just thinking."
"Me too," Coraline mumbled and held the human close to her, closing her eyes with a small smile. "Can I ask you a question?" She looked back to him.
"What kind of question?" He tilted his head, looking up at the young giant with a smile. His mind was so busy trying to think of what it could be, he was surprised he heard a stone rolling across the rock floor and his head snapped in another direction of the cave.
His hazel eyes narrowed fiercely into the dark as he felt the child move closer to him, even though it wouldn't do much. "Show yourself!" He shouted, making sure his tone was fierce and angry.
Coraline kept her eyes fixed towards where Conrad was looking, fear plain in her eyes as she tried to hide near him, although it was impossible. But he made her feel safe, and she liked it. "C-Conrad?" She whispered, glancing down at the human for only a brief second.
"It's okay." He murmured reassuringly as he kept his gaze locked on the shadows. "I said, show yourself!" He barked, his voice louder and sharper.
Just as he was about to speak again, a man emerged from the shadows and he quickly recognized him as the one who shot his shoulder and put a bunch of bullets in Coraline's leg. Anger instantly washed over him as he stood protectively in the way of him and the young girl. "You again?" He hissed, eyes narrowed still.
The man only smirked with a pistol in his hand with a finger on the trigger. His dark eyes darted back and forth between the giant and his fellow human, although in his eyes Conrad was a traitor.
"Don't just stand there in silence! Drop your gun, now!" Conrad demanded as he raised a hand to his shoulder which was still throbbing in pain.
Standing in his place, the man raised the gun and aimed it directly at Conrad's head. "I don't plan to. You've sided with the giants, you're a traitor!" He growled, then turned and aimed the gun at one of Coraline's large brown eyes.
Coraline stared at the gun, able to see where it was aimed and moved her hands, covering her eyes. The bullets wouldn't go all the way through her hands, so they made good shields against the tiny weapons. It would definitely still hurt though.
Conrad looked at Coraline and smiled slightly at how smart she was, and how she was protecting her eyes. Before he could turn his head back around, a loud gunshot, and he felt wind fly right by his head and his eyes widened in shock at how close that was. Had he not been looking at Coraline, he'd be dead now.
Just as he went to tckle the man, he had ran out of the cave and was already speeding across the large meadow to get away, and Conrad looked back up at Coraline with a frown. "Alright kid, this is it. We have to leave this place."
