Prologue.
The air was musky as he shook out his wings. Rain was coming down lightly and he had always hated getting wet. It made him feel like a drowned cat; the mangy animals that looked pitiful with their nasty hair matted and clumped, the dirty animal smell that lingered in their wake. He scowled, disgusted, always hated the rain. He stood under the tree line, as his eyes zeroed in on the village. Puny humans rushed to and fro trying to finish their chores before the sky opened up wide. He had always found them incapable. They worked like slaves; were born to help around the keep, the grow up to marry someone who would help them with their own property and tasks. It was pathetic. Their emotions never made sense to him either, just another thing they were slaves to. His eyes hardened as he spotted just the one he was looking for. The person who called himself a man, made him laugh. The human had been annoying him for weeks. He smiled when he noticed everyone keeping a safe distance from him, heard the whispers. They all said the man was crazy, that he was losing his mind. They said there was no such thing as a monster in the woods. That if there was a beast, they'd all know by now. His smile overtook his face, oh how wrong the simply townspeople were. The thought of creating havoc crossed his mind. The joy it would be to see their eyes grow wide in fear, the rush of hunger that would shoot through him when they started to run. They would think they could escape him, if only they ran faster. His grin turned sinister as he shook his head and turned back towards the hunter. No, he wouldn't take the town. That would be too easy and unsatisfying.
He waited and watched for a few days straight. No food or sleep was needed. The beast knew what was to come and purred. He would go without because that would make the end result all the better. When the hunter stepped into the tree line, his eyes brightened. The weapons were as useless as the human holding them. His steps were silent as the person in front of him stomped around. He followed behind, loving the rush that pushed through him. The beast made a deliberate step on a branch and was satisfied with the snap it made, the silence that followed and the freeze of the man. A growl ripped through his throat as the man whipped around with wide fearful eyes. He smiled. The hunter had become the hunted.
