The feeling of a gentle hand shaking my shoulder was enough to pull me from my light sleep. I winced as I realized that I had fallen asleep with my head bent and my chin buried in my chest, putting my neck in an uncomfortable and unnatural position.I cracked open my eyes, only for them to immediately widen and heat rise in my cheeks. As usual I don't remember falling asleep, but apparently both Sophia and I had. Sophia was curled up in my lap, her arms loosely around my middle and her face buried in my abdomen. I could feel the soft tingle of her breath on a patch of exposed skin and only blushed further.
I looked up to see who woke me, and I was met with a smiling Carol. "Get Sophia up, we're here." She said softly as she turned to gather her stuff. I nodded, even as her back was turned to me, and looked down at the sleeping angel in my lap. "Sophia~" I whispered in her ear and shook her shoulder. She didn't stir aside from an adorable snort and I sighed, time for plan B.
I, very carefully, slid my arms under Sophia's unconscious form and lifted her up. I inched out of the booth, the surprisingly light girl barely fazing me as I held her bridal style. Her head was tucked into the hollow in my neck and her body immediately curled up towards the warmth in my chest. If she wasn't so fragile I would probably drop her to wake her up, like I did with my sister if she fell asleep after I had woken her, but I think Sophia would break.
"Carol, can you take her?" I asked as I walked over to the older woman. She nodded, smiling as she gently took her daughter from me. "I'll get her awake, thank you, your a strong one!" I giggled uncharacteristically and returned to our seat, gathering mine and Sophia's bags.
"Wha, awhat?" Sophia's gibberish caused me to laugh, but the second I turned around it caught in my throat. Her hair was messy and sticking every which way. Her sparkling brown eyes were bleary as she rubbed the palms of her hands across them. God, even as a mess this girl was beautiful.
"Peregrine? Why are you staring at me?" Sophia broke my trance, leaving me to sputter some random answer before turning back around and fiddling with my knife sheath. I heard her chuckle and then felt gentle arms wrap around me from behind. "It's okay, I don't mind." She laughed, her tone light, soft, and cheery.
I finished packing everything tightly and stood, ignoring the several pops and cracks my back made. "I'm scared." Sophia said quietly as she peeked through the RV's windows at the carnage outside. I could all but see the fear of everybody in the RV and I knew that it would never truly fade. "If you get scared, just hold my hand. I said I would protect you, and I keep my promises."
Sophia nodded and we walked out of the RV following the others. We walked past tanks and saw many corpses wearing army uniforms scattered across the lawns a pavement. "I didn't realize we were in the Halloween section of 'Better Homes and Gardens'!" I growled to myself as I stomped harshly on the still moving severed head of a civilian. I felt something nudge my arm and turned, seeing Sophia with her hand extended towards mine. I smiled at her and took it, intertwining her shaking fingers with mine.
The incessant buzzing of flies caused me to rapidly shake my head and swat at the air around me. The smell of multitudes of rotting corpses that have baked in the sun for who knows how long was enough to make me gag, but I found it way worse that I was nearly used to the smell. I hated the fact that my body was unconsciously accepting the way the world had become. My sleep was lighter and I was always tense and ready to attack, my ears had become immensely sensitive and were constantly pricked for any sound, my hands constantly shook and twitched with the need to hold a weapon like a druggie's, my eyes were so much better in the dark, and my body had learned to run off of little sleep, food, and water.
When we reached a metal shuttered door I realized just how deep in shit we were. A sickening chorus of the dead sang their eerie song, their hands reaching out like reapers trying to drag us to hell. I immediately turned towards them and pushed Sophia behind me, drawing my bow with speed my malnourished body shouldn't have had. I didn't shoot yet as I knew I wouldn't get my arrows back unless they got too close for the groups safety.
