Chapter One

Introductions

It's funny how we shouldn't exist. Maybe if we didn't the world wouldn't be like this. I still get nightmares from that day, the day my mother died.

Thirteen years ago, my parents drove to the airport, for a weekend holiday. I didn't know much then, being so young. Dad will never tell me the story. He always says 'When you are older'. Heather and Todd have told me some parts and I have managed to get a brief outline of the story.

I remember smiling at my parents, saying bye, hugging my mother and not wanting them to leave, even if it was for two days. Heather, my older sister, who was just six, watched them leave. I didn't notice her sad smile, as if she knew something bad will happen. Heather told me years later that she had dreamed that something horrible will happen to Mom.

We were staying with Austin and Mary, friends of my parents. The weekend holiday had apparently been their idea. Apparently, Mom and Dad had worked too hard and managing 4 children was apparently a task. Yeah, right.  Oscar, who was mine and Ethan's best friend at that time had grinned at me and pulled my hair. I growled at him and hit him, hating it when people pulled my hair.

My parents stopped at a service station, I was told. Just for half an hour. My dad didn't want to leave my mum in the car alone because she had recently hurt her foot and couldn't walk far. Dad had only just got inside the service station when he heard an explosion from outside. He looked back to see his car blown up. He quickly ran towards the remains of the car, where mum's lifeless body lay, crushed.

I remember the funeral, all of us in black. I had never been to a funeral before. Oscar had stood loyally by my side. There was a weak old woman there, someone who looked familiar; who was talking to my dad about god knows what. Afterwards my mum's coffin was cremated, her ashes kept in a crystal jar, which is still kept in my dad's room.

I stared at the TV screen, watching The Secret Circle, when Ethan barged into my room. "What the hell are you doing?" I shouted at him.

"Sor-ry, Estelle's on the phone." Ethan rolled his eyes.

I sighed and put the TV on pause, getting up and going to the landing where the phone was. "Close the door after you!" I shout at Ethan.

Ethan scowled and banged the door shut as loud as he possibly could.

"ARE YOU OBTUSE?" Heather shouted from her room. She sounded pissed off. Well, that was a stupid thing for me to say. Obviously she was pissed off.

"Sorry!" I called out. We (me and Ethan) avoided annoying Heather, for she had her full powers, and angering someone with full powers will mean your end. (Not literally, you'll just be injured –really really badly). "Ethan Dylan Nathanial Collins! You had better not do that again!" I shouted at my brother. I know that most people would love to have a twin, but it is not worth the hassle. My twin brother is evil - an evil, good looking 15 year old boy. "Hey Estelle." I spoke into the phone.

"Oh my flipping gosh! I still cannot believe you're moving! What am I going to do!!!! OMG! I am going to have to hang around with normal people!" Estelle practically shouted down the phone and I was surprised that my ear wasn't damaged as I processed what she had said

"WHAT?! I'M NOT NORMAL! How cruel of you!" This time it was my turn to shout down the phone.

"Electra!" Heather screamed at me from her room. Oops. At 19, Heather Francesca May Collins was moody. She was a college drop-out but still had big aims – to be a slut. Jokes, that's a bit mean. I don't actually know what her aim in life is. Heather was named after mum. Mum's name was actually Francesca Heather May Collins but to avoid confusion, Dad called Heather, Heather Francesca. I was actually named Electra after my grandmother, but the May in my name came from my mother. It's a tradition in a family of witches to be named after a close family member. I was never actually close to Grandma.

"No. You're normal. I mean, as in, humans. Fellow humans!" Estelle continued, sighing softly. She had whispered the last few words and I was having a problem hearing them because of my recently damaged ear but I figured out what she was saying – in the end.

"Oh yeah. I forgot." I wandered off into my own happy little world.

"How can you forget what you are?" Estelle was shouting again.

"Pssch. You know that I forget that I know you know. You know that I know that you knowing that the Coopers knowing that you know will end up making this world complicated. You know?" I grinned, trying to do my best to confuse Estelle.

"Yes, I know. Anyways, how's Todd?" Did she just say that in a flirty tone?

"He's great, he's out right now with his human girlfriend." Hahahahaha. I love annoying her.

"WHAT?!" I heard a chair fall over and Estelle mutter 'ow'.

"Yeah, he's got a girlfriend. They've been out for three weeks...and I think he's done it." I say it really casually, just so that it annoyed her.

Sniff. "Erm...er... um... really?"

"Yeah, I think so."

"Waahhh!!!..."

"What's wrong?"

"I kinda... like him."

"Ha ha! That's funny. I knew it. Don't worry, there's no girlfriend!"

"Cow." The phone went dead.
