Chapter 17: I'm On My Way Home

Nicholas's P.O.V

"Are you okay?" I asked walking from the family room into the kitchen, to find Diane rolling down the stairs. "Shit!" I ran to where she laid at the bottom of the staircase. I sat down on the floor and placed her head on my lap. "Babe, wake up, wake up, wake up." I kept whispering as I held her face with one hand and softly slapped her left cheek with the other. "Nic--" She muttered becoming half conscious but quickly fainting again, her eyes rolling to the back of her head. "No, no, no, no! Don't do this to me D! I need you!" I said panicking "Wake up!" I whispered as my voice cracked and a tear slid slowly down my face. I picked her up, carrying her bridal style. I went over to the kitchen counter where I had left my keys and phone and I grabbed them. I walked to the door and I placed Diane over my shoulder. I opened the front door and after going through it, I locked it. I walked over to my car. I unlocked it and opened the passenger door. I placed Diane on the seat and I buckled her to it. I closed the passenger door and went over to the driver side. Once inside the car I turned it on, tearing down the streets going at 80 miles per hour.

I'm going to the only place I can go; my pack. I wiped away what little tears I shad in the heat of the moment. Listening to the song on the radio, my mind traveled and thought about all the possibilities and all the things that Diane and I had working against us. I needed to be there for her, I need to protect her and keep her safe. Even if that means that she'll hate me forever for stealing her freedom. One thing that Diane hates is the feeling of being tied down or held back because or by someone, and if I do what I'm considering she'll hate me forever. But it doesn't matter, as long as she's alive and well, she can hate me all she wants. This reminds me of that one time....

Flash Back to 2 years back

I am currently in the woods with my bestfriend Diane. She means the world to me and I don't imagine ever loosing her. "Are you coming?"  Said Diane getting me out of my thoughts. She extended her arm to me from the tree branch that she was sitting on. "Sure.."  I whispered, taking her arm.  I was pulled up by her and I sat down right next to where she was sitting. "Do you love me?" Diane asked taking me by surprise. "Of course I love you, you're my best friend, I'd do anything for you."  I lied because I didn't see her as just my best friend. Exactly  on my 12th birthday, my father reveled to me that Diane Parson was my mate and that I was going to someday be the Alpha of our pack. That was one of the best days of my life. "Oh..."  Was all that she managed to say, hurt and disappointment clear in her.

I nudged her with my elbow and said, "Hey, follow me."  "What? Why? Where are we going?"  She asked clearly confused. "You sure know how to ask questions don't . Just follow me, trust me."  I said hoping for the best. She looked as if she was debating something in her mind but then she brushed it off and answered, "Fine."  I climbed down the tree, Diane quickly behind me. "But first..." I said getting out a blindfold and shaking it in the air for her to see. "No, no, no. I'm not going to where ever you're taking me with that on."   She quickly refused. "Oh, come on! First of all you don't know where I am taking you, so it really doesn't matter if you're looking or not and second, it wouldn't be as special if you could see the way. Can't you have a little faith on your best friend? Just put it on. For me?" I practically begged her to put the blindfold on. "Okay, you can put it on me... Only because you're annoying."  She muttered  giving in. I went over to her  and placed the blindfold on her eyes. I tied it and said, "Okay, give me your hand and hold on tight."  She did as told giving me her hand. We walked for about 20 minutes, as we were getting close to where I want to get to."I hear water, where are we Nick?"  She asked  slightly scared. "Be patient you'll see in a moment."  I said trying to confort her.

"We're here."  I announced taking her blindfold off.  She opened her eyes quickly closing them adjusting to the light. "It's beautiful..." She said in awe. "I know, I discovered it when I was 10. Ever since that moment it became my peace place."  I said scratching the back of my neck remembering when I was little. "The view, the water fall, the flowers, the fresh green grass. Nick this is everything, it perfect, it beautiful."  She said still taking in the place."I have an idea."  I told her. "Quick, take off your clothes." I said as I started taking mine off. Finally I was just in underwear, and so was Diane. "Come with me."  I told her and  we started to run toward the river that was under the beautiful waterfall. Diane was face to face with me, our noses brushing up against each other, about three feet into the freezing water.

"You know, I can't think of a better moment to say this, so here it goes. I love you Diane, and not as in sisterly or  friendly love, I love you as in I want to grow old and gray with you. Ever since we were 5 years old and your parents brought you to my house and you stood in my porch with a beautiful bright toothy smile, I loved you. You've known me for as long as I can remember. You've always been there for me and I want to keep it that way. So, will you make me the happiest man on earth and do me the honor of calling you my girlfriend?"  She excitedly jumped on top of me and whispered "Yes! A thousand times yes! I'll make you the happiest, I love you too!"  I twirled us around the lake's shore in pure bliss, happiness and excitement. As she was straddling my waist I looked deep into her light eyes, her beautiful face lighting up the place. I inched closer to her face, our lips softy brushing against each other. I kissed her. Nothing rushed, nothing forced, nothing strong, just perfect. A purely blissful soft kiss that left my lips burning with desire for her.

End of Flashback

I punched the steering wheel in frustration. I hated the feeling of powerlessness. That feeling that you get when you want to help or do something about a problem, but you just can't. As I was looking out onto the road I noticed that the sun started to rise. 6:00 am read the digital clock on the car. I've been driving since 1:00 am, and for 5 hours Diane has been in this fainted state. It's all the same, same trees; same road, same empty road. 5 hours of silence, of screaming silence, because sometimes quiet is violent. I grabbed Diane's hand, Diane's cold, wobbly, weak hand and whispered kissing it, "Everything will be fine babe, I promise..." As if she could her me. I know it's stupid and foolish because she's not dead, but I feel alone. I need her back, and if this is how it will feel if I loose her, I can't allow that. I make a right to exit the main road and turn into my parents drive way.
