"Ash, Ashton, it's time to wake up. You've got school today bud," my dad whispered quietly in my sleeping ear. "C'mon, I thought you liked school," he tried again. My shoulder was nudged and my blanket slowly pulled off my body.
"Daddy, I don't want to go to school," I finally whined. Usually, I would love it, I would love to go and hang out with my friends and I liked learning new things, but lately, school wasn't a great as it used to be. I kept my eyes shut and curled into a little ball, hoping I would be able to stay home.
"How come you don't want to go to school? Don't you feel well?" My other dad asked, great, now I had to convince the both of them. I groaned and opened my eyes to see my dad Michael sitting on my bed with me, and my dad Luke standing in the door way.
"I just don't want to go," I complained. Luke was looking like he would let it go, but Michael wasn't so convinced.
"You have to have a reason to not want to go," Michael said, raising his eyebrow. Luke walked into my room then, sitting on the edge of my bed as well. I was only 7, and they were so much bigger than me, so every time something like this happened, it was kind of intimidating.
"The other kids make fun of me," I gave in, looking down at my superman pyjamas, and hugging my stuffed penguin Luke had bought me a little tighter.
"Why do they make fun of you, Ashy?" Luke asked carefully. I didn't want to say it, I didn't want them to think it was their fault because it wasn't. It wasn't their fault, it was my mum's fault. If she hadn't given me away, then I would have a normal family. Don't get me wrong, I loved Luke and Michael, they were the coolest dads ever, but what some of the kids say is really mean.
Sighing I gave in and said, "They make fun of me for having not having two dads and no mum." I still didn't look up, but Luke moved away a little.
"Do you think it's bad you don't have a mum?" Michael asked. I looked up, this wasn't what I was expecting from him. I shook my head.
"Do you think it's bad that you have two dads?" Luke asked. Again, I shook my head. I didn't have a problem with any of this.
"The other kids just say mean things about it, and it hurts my feelings," I whispered. I didn't want to cry, I didn't want to make them sad too, but it was too late. As my tears fell, Luke pulled me over between him and Michael and gave me a hug. Michael rubbed my back gently, and Luke pushed my hair away from my face and wiped my tears.
"It's alright, Ashton. You don't have to go to school today if you don't want to," Michael said after a while. I nodded and sniffed, wiping my nose on my sleeve.
"Than-nk you," I mumbled out. Michael looked as his watch then.
"I've got to go to work now, but I'll be back later, ok bud?" He asked me. I nodded and tried to smile at him. He smiled back and kissed my forehead. "Bye, Lukey," he said, getting up and kissing Luke on the lips.
