I had just finished decorating the picture that was going to be my thank you to Luke and Michael for looking after me. It was a picture of the three of us at the beach, our favourite place to go on the weekends, and we were all sitting and building sandcastles. We would always build the coolest sandcastles and then wait for the tide to rise and wash them away. At the bottom of the picture I wrote “Thank you for being the best dads in the world. I love you – Ashy”. I really hoped they liked it.

I walked out of my room when I heard Michael getting home, the front door closed and I ran towards him, jumping into his arms as he put his bag down near the door. He gave me a hug and a kiss on the head.

“I’m glad to see that you’re feeling better now,” he smiled. I just grinned and hugged him again.

“Daddy tried to make pancakes again, but he burnt them, so we went and bought some instead,” I said, letting Michael stand and pick his bag up again.

“Well at least he didn’t burn you this time,” Michael laughed.

“I CAN HEAR YOU!” Luke yelled from the living room. We all laughed.

“Daddy, once you’ve put your bag away, and you go to the lounge room with daddy? I made you both something,” I asked.

“Sure thing, Ashy. Just give me a sec,” Michael said. He went and put his bag in his and Luke’s room, then went to watch the television with Luke while I retrieved my picture from my room. As I walked into the lounge room, Luke and Michael were cuddled up, talking quietly to each other. I liked seeing them like this, they always looked so happy, so carefree, so in love. Luke saw me and smile, moving over and patting the spot on the couch between him and Michael. I sat down with them and showed them my picture.

“I want to say thank you for looking after me and loving me, even when you didn’t have to. I love you both,” I said, handing them the drawing to examine. They took their time, smiling and looking at every detail.

“You are my favourite little boy in the entire world,” Luke whispered, kissing my head and hugging me.

“Mine too,” Michael agreed, hugging me as well. I was being squished between two fully grown men hugging me to death, but I could not have been happier.

“I can’t breathe,” I squeaked out after a while, at which I was let free.

“If you go shower now,” Luke said, “Dinner will be ready when you get out.” I nodded and ran off to get clean. When I got out of the shower and put on my pyjamas, I went to the kitchen and saw my drawing was on the fridge, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Luke and Michael were putting dinner on the table as I went and sat down. We were having pasta, one of my favourites. We all sat down and Michael put my plate in front of me, then we all ate.

“I got a call from someone today,” Luke mentioned after we had been silently eating for a while. Michael and I both looked up and waited for him to continue with what he was saying. “It was from Calum.” Luke was looking at his pasta and pushing it around his plate with his fork. Michael on the other hand nearly choked.
