let's set the scene, shall we?
it was a beautiful sunny day, with a slight breeze in the air causing the vibrant leaves of the trees around the neighbourhood to rustle. everything was just so vibrant, even the little yellow dress i was wearing.
i tucked the dress under my bum as i sat down to protect myself from the moisture covering the grass thanks to the dew that had collected over night. i couldn't comprehend that at the age i was, though, and so up until i was around 8 i believed that it rained every single night. michael used to make fun of me for it.
ah, yes, michael. his mother was best friends with my mother since they were around 10 years old.
the story goes that they would always discuss how they were going to marry two perfect men and live next to each other in the perfect neighbourhood and raise wonderful children who would also become best friends and then the children would do the exact same as them. they even planned to get pregnant at the same time so that the children would be the same age.
everything was going swimmingly during their pregnancy, and they were both due on the same day - crazy, i know. well, it turned out that michael was eager to get out into the world, and was born two weeks before me. we never let the fact that he was two weeks older go.
back to what i mentioned before, though. our mother's were hoping for two girls, so that they could follow the exact same path as their mother's. well, when michael was born with a little baby penis, that plan was ruined - because, to them, a boy and a girl could never be friends; they'd just end up falling in love!
well, they weren't entirely wrong in our situation.
my first kiss was when we were both around 1 year old. that's where the before mentioned beautiful sunny day comes in; we were out in our garden - yes, our fathers took down the middle fence and made one huge garden - and we were both practicing walking.
well, once michael had reached the level of taking around four steps in a row, he headed over to me, and we smushed our gross little food covered toddler lips together for the first time, and it sure was magical. it's probably on tape somewhere in my mother's house.
from that point on, it was a straight path to marriage for us.
we both went to the same nursery and we'd always stay together because we were scared of other kids. then we joined the same primary school where we somehow got to be in all of the same lessons together, and we'd get married in the playground every wednesday.
for the other four days, we'd spend our playground time chasing each other around until we were exhausted, then we'd sit on one of the benches and swing our legs in time with each other.
we were in year 4 when, in a maths lesson, the kids on our table dared us to kiss for 10 seconds. before that we'd always share a quick kiss before we had to leave our joint garden and go inside, but anything longer than a second seemed forbidden to us, so we were both nervous. the four kids on our table told us to meet them in the cloakroom at lunch so that we could do it then.
we all felt like such rebellious kids when we gathered in the cloakroom. we were all talking in whispers so that we wouldn't get caught.
"for ten seconds." one of the little boys said, and michael and i both nodded. "i'll time it." the little blonde girl said, holding up her arm with her hello kitty watch on.
mini michael and mini me turned to each other and waited for our friends to count us in. i stretched up to my tiptoes and he leaned down enough for our lips to touch. we kept them pressed against each other for 10 seconds while the kids around us gasped and giggled. michael and i giggled too, once we stepped away.
