Beauty and the beast (2017): Least favourite characters.

Least favourite characters:
The beast (played by Dan Stevens).
Maurice ( Kevin Kline).

I don't hate these characters but in comparison to characters like Belle and Gaston, in this movie, I feel like they fall short of their potential.

The beast (played by Dan Stevens):

The issue that I have with the beast in this film is simply that I feel like his emotions weren't shown enough. For example, I never particularly felt afraid of the beast at any point in this film because Steven's portrayal of him was always so charming and comforting. This was a positive in the beast's characterisation later in the movie because I really did feel the beat's pain, but I wanted to feel the anger and darker side in the earlier parts of the film which I felt were missing. Also, since Emma was always projecting some serious emotion and chemistry towards the beast, I wanted more of that on the beast's side but in a way the fact that he was less emotional suited his character. I really did appreciate how loving and simply gentle he was in this movie, in was obvious to everybody how Belle could fall for him despite his looks. Overall, I do not hate the beast in this movie, in fact I sort of love him, but he is one of my least favourite characters in this movie.

Maurice (played by Kevin Kline):

Maurice is a character who should have made me feel sympathy and anger when Gaston hit him, and I did feel those things but the problem was that the pain I felt for him was mostly because of Belle. I feel like this is because Kline could have expressed more of a reaction to the things that were happening to him, but maybe I only have this expectation because Emma had a huge reaction to everything that was happening to her father. There was nothing seriously wrong with Maurice's character in this movie but seeing as he is an intergalactic part of the movie (he stole the Rose) I wanted more time focusing on his individual reaction to things, separate from Belle. Still, I don't particularly hate this character, he just fell short for me in comparison to other characters in this movie.
