1983 - 1983
The terror began in the shopping centre. My younger sister Kara, she was so excited to finally meet her hero. The first person who gained a ability. The first superhero. Miro. Her smile was so big, her body shaking in excitement at meeting him. The one who had inspired her to help people. To become a doctor.
Her dreams were shattered as soon they made physical contact. Upon shaking the hand of her hero sparks of electricity passed between them, causing Miro to faint. With the most powerful hero unconscious everyone looked at Kara, shocked. They must have thought she had attacked him.
Then I touched her shoulder, to check on her. Her face was hanging down. As if she was unconscious as well. It was then it became apparent something incredible had happened, some force had blown me away, into the crowd.
Around my younger sister several small cones of wind had appeared, spinning and pulling on people. As the crowd ran away screaming I ran to little Kara. Shaking her I tried to wake her up but it was for naught. The strange power that had awakened in her fractured, throwing me to the floor and Kara into the air.
She was blown out the doors, away from the shopping centre, to the outskirts of the city. If it were not for Miro waking up I would have run after her right away. But there he was, the first ability user.
Getting on his feet, he asked to no one in particular, "What happened?"
Running over to him, I caught his attention before blurting out, "You somehow activated an ability in my sister! Please help me get her back. She is being controlled by it, unconscious."
Miro stared at me for a few seconds. "Who are you?"
"I am Kate. You activated an ability in my sister. Now please help us!"
Holding his chin as he thought, Miro murmured something I could not hear before he stared into my eyes for a moment. "It seems your younger sister is an artifact, someone who had an ability hidden inside. Where did she go?"
"She was blown to the outskirts. Please bring me to her," I asked of him, remembering he had the ability to fly.
"Sure," he said. Taking me in his arms, he sprinted outside before jumping up, flying us through the air. It took us only a minute to get all the way to what had become a large tornado swaying above Kara's head.
"It seems your younger sister is quite powerful. Possibly even topping the charts," Miro said to me. "Are you ok if I knock her out," He asked, crunching his fist in preparation.
"No! I will try to wake her up first." Shaking in my boots I wondered what would happen if I were knocked out by my own sister. "Uuhm, but if she knocks me out please do what you must to protect the city."
Grinning at me, understanding my position, Miro took a step back as I walked to my sister. The poor thing. Her shirt had torn at the sleeves, leaving her arms open to the forces of nature. Then again, she had become one herself. Careful to not stumble over the train tracks, I closed in on her. For the moment it appeared she remained peaceful.
Approaching her, I pulled Kara in for a tight hug. The tornado immediately became slower, confirming she was still in there. "I am here little sis. Everything will be alright. Now wake up please. You still need to chat with Miro."
At the mention of his name the wind stopped turning, the tornado disappearing. Feeling tears on her shoulder, Kate leaned back to look at her sister's face. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she shivered. "Kate. What happened? Where are we?"
"We are on the outskirts of town sis. It seems your career will be different from what you thought. Now let's go say hi to Miro, ok?"
Wiping the tears from her face, Kara looked behind her sister, quickly spotting her hero. Shaking at the sight of him, she grabbed my hand and ran over to him.
