2023 - 2035
Creaking, a fan spun slowly, pushing fresh air into the bunker for General Tau and his soldiers to breathe. The breath of every person in the room was audible as silence reigned.
It had been a heavy minute. After years of war with the enemy, that moronic state which protected the last few ability users, those monstrous superhumans, nuclear weapons had been launched by both sides. Containment to one country was not enough, they had to be exterminated.
Curious as to why he had not felt the shake of explosions yet, Tau addressed the sergeant. "Have the missiles hit their targets?"
Typing at his top speed, the sergeant checked the information that was sent back to his screen. Raising an eyebrow, he typed furiously, double checking the information. "No general. According to the system, each launch was successful. But there are no registered explosions. Satellite imaging shows no nuclear explosions in the areas covered by our cameras. The strike was unsuccessful sir."
Putting his hands down on the table, Tau sighed. "So society lives on for now," he whispered.
"I did not hear your order sir. Could you please repeat it," the sergeant asked.
Silent for a moment, Tau spoke. "I want to know the location of our missiles now! If they did not explode then where did they go?"
It took over ten minutes before the sergeant got back to him. He had always been a loyal soldier, speaking his mind when an opinion was needed. Saluting, the sergeant began his report. "Sir, the missiles disappeared in the sky. Our spy confirmed the same happened with the enemy their missiles. Checking our intel, we have confirmed there is an ability user who has evaporated our missiles. With this it is confirmed the containment and sequential destruction of ability users has failed. We can only pray we will not gain another Kara the Storm, sir."
Saluting again, the sergeant stood, waiting for orders.
"So you mean to say the ability users, those monsters, have returned," Tau asked, shaking at the thought of those powerful beings once more roaming the Earth.
"Yes sir. They have," the sergeant answered, confirming a fear every human had held for the last twelve years.
