"Tell me something about yourself."
Kirstin asked as she walked Avi down the chrome painted hallway."What's there to know?" Avi replied.
Kirstie shrugged. "I don't know. I guess it's just weird having someone who..." she trailed off, struggling to find the right words.
"Someone who what?" Avi questioned.
"Someone who we barely know suddenly show up and start living with us." She said finally.
"Is that all?" Avi replied, playfully cocking an eyebrow.
"Yeah. I mean, I guess. I've known Scott and Mitch ever since I was ten. We grew up on the streets. No parents; no authority figures in our lives. I was tough... but we held each other up."
"Must've been nice." Avi said quietly.
"Yeah. We're all so different but somehow we found a way to see past all that. Those idiots are my family. I don't know where I'd be without them."
At this point, they had stopped walking and stood in front of the door to Avi's new room.
"It's amazing how quickly you start to become your true self when you stop worrying about what people think." Kirstin laughed a little to herself."Is there a point to this story?' Avi said as he scratched the back of his neck, 'Not that I'm complaining, I just--" he motioned to the door.
A small smile crept up Kirstin's face, filling her half-awake eyes with genuine compassion. "I get it; you're tired. I'm tired too, just hear me out. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you don't have to be afraid. You can trust us." She said this as she placed a hand on Avi's upper arm.
With a small smile, she let go of him and entered a key-code into a touchscreen panel to the left of the door. She then asked him to put his hand on the same screen. A line of blue light ran across the screen vertically, then horizontally, apparently reading his handprint. A few moments later, the door let out a quiet beep, then opened.
"There you go," She said, "now the ship knows who you are.""Thanks," Avi said as he entered the room. Kirstin followed close behind. Inside, the room was actually quite stark, but still larger than Avi thought it was going to be. There was only one bed, a bedside table, and a door to what Avi assumed was the ensuite, but it was still a whole lot more than the blood stained brick floor he was used to.
Kirstin broke into his thoughts, "I know its kind of small, but hopefully it'll do."
"No, this… this is perfect." He said as he turned to Kirstin leaning against the door frame; a kind smile plastered across his face.
She smiled back, but stopped suddenly. "We don't do this for our own entertainment, you know?" Kirstin said, quite abruptly.
"What do you mean?" Avi asked, his brows knitted together in confusion.
Kirstin looked at Avi with her arms crossed, concern written plainly on her face. "This. This whole 'good-for-nothing-criminals' thing. There's more to us than you think to know. There's something seriously wrong with this government, and something tells me that you know it too." She stood up straight from the door frame. "Is that why we you were where we found you?" She asked.
Avi sighed, "Maybe."
She kept going, barely acknowledging Avi's answer. "I don't like how they keep everyone down; pretending that they care for everyone's wellbeing, but at the same time enforcing laws that don't allow for any kind of individuality. I'm so tired of following someone else's rules about who I should be. And why should we limit the amount of power in this world to one person anyway? Don't you see? We could be kings of the world. You. Me. Us."
"You say that, but no matter how much power someone has, nobody's ever satisfied." Avi said with a hint of bitterness in his voice.
"That' not what I meant. I meant that there should be power among every single person, not just a few."
"You've got a good head, and a strong heart. You know that?" Avi laughed.
Kirstin smirked back at him. "Always being on the run. Never ever having one place to call our own; it taught us something." She replied.
Avi looked at her expectantly, but Kirstin turned and started walking out the door. As soon as she was on the other side, she continued, "We've got to be strong for those who can't. Even when your entire world is falling apart, no matter what, you have to hold on tight to fragile hearts."
Before the door closed, Kirstin gave Avi a mischievous wink. He responded with a just as equally playful smirk. However As soon as the door was fully closed, he dropped his façade. "You're too late." Avi said softly, barely audible to anyone but himself, "Mine's already cracked."
