I ripped open the door to my room and collapsed on my bed, tears flowing out of my eyes. All of the sadness and anger that I had bottled up over the past 6 years finally exploded out of me. I curled up into a ball and cried into my pillow. To everyone here I'm a tough, fearless leader. That's only me on the outside. On the inside, I'm a broken, scared girl.
After a few minutes, I heard footsteps walk over to my bed. I guess I forgot to close the door. The person sat next to me and pulled me into a comforting hug. I looked up and was met with Zach's worried eyes. I just hugged him back and wept onto his shoulder. He rested his chin on my head.
After a few minutes, Zach said,"We should probably head down to the cafeteria. I told Emily that I would grab you and meet her at the big feast. She's probably wondering where we are."
I looked up at him and nodded my head. I dried the rest of my tears and crawled off of my bed. We walked down the hallway and to the elevator, pressing the 2 button to get to the cafeteria.
"Are you sure you're ok now?" Zach asked me.
"Yeah I'm good. Thanks for being there for me," I replied.
"No problem, that's what friends are for," he said. The elevator slowed and opened up to the cafeteria.
In the cafeteria, there was a HUGE table with an enormous amount of food on it. Kids surrounded it shoving food in their mouths and throwing it at each other. Emily was sitting alone at a small, gray table with a plate of food, eating it like a civilized person. She looked like the only tame human being in the room.
Zach and I each grabbed a plate and began filling them with food. There was a section for each type food. I went to the potato section, meat section, fried food section, vegetable section, and drink section. We walked over to Emily while trying to dodge the flying food. When I sat down, I had mashed potatoes in my hair and stuffing on my face with pieces of fried chicken down my shirt. There were mustard and ketchup stains on my pants. Zach looked a mess, too.
"Where were you guys? I've been sitting by myself watching this food massacre for 15 minutes," Emily said.
"I couldn't find my jacket," I lied. I don't want Emily to know about my break down and then Zach comforting me. It would just be kinda weird, and I did not want her to get the wrong idea.
"You lose everything, Hayley," She told me. "You need to be more organized."
"I don't want to be a neat freak like you," I joked.
"I am not a neat freak! Tell her, Zach!" she yelled.
"Why am I brought into every stupid argument you two have?!" Zach said.
"We do not have stupid arguments!" Emily and I exclaimed. We burst into a fit laughter. We ate and talked until we were stuffed with food.
We went to Emily's room afterwards. She insisted that it would be the best place to hang since it was "the cleanest and most organized".
Honestly, it was the cleanest room I've ever seen. Her bed was neatly made with folded pajamas resting at the corner. There were lined with books organized from largest to smallest. Her toiletries were all in separate baskets on top of the toilet in her bathroom.
"What do you guys want to do now?" I asked ask flopped onto Emily's bed. It really was comfortable.
"I dunno. We can ding dong ditch some people who are in their rooms. Wow this bed feels like a cloud!" Zach said as he flopped onto the bed next to me.
"I doubt the others are in their rooms. It looked like everyone if not most were in the cafeteria playing with the food," Emily said. "What do you think we should we do, Hayley?"
"Why don't we go to the roof?" I suggested. Zach and Emily agreed, so we took the elevator to the last floor, the roof. I always snuck up there at night to look at the stars and clear my head. It's the only nice and relaxing place in the building. You can hear all the nature sounds. The stars shine brightly and cover the whole sky. Really bright stars make up the different constellations.
We went to the center of the roof and laid in circle with our heads touching, staring at the sky and identifying constellations. It helped me relax a bit, but I still couldn't keep calm knowing I might die the next day. I might have to witness my friends' deaths.
"We might become constellations," Emily said.
"What? How would that happen?" I asked her.
"I remember hearing that when you die, your soul goes up to the sky and becomes a constellation. Since we might die tomorrow, we could become constellations that people name, admire, and point out in the night sky," she said. Hearing this made tears start to swell in my eyes.
"We're not going to die, Emily. We'll survive," I said.
"Face it Hayley. Kronos has just stuck death in our faces and wants us to battle it. At least one of us is going to die. We can't change that. If it's us 3 left, then it's either you or me, Hayley. I don't want to be the first one to draw my weapon," she said.
I sat up and looked at her. Tears were streaming down my face. Emily laid still looking at the sky, tears silently rolling down her cheeks. Zach was facing us, but he was staring at his hands in his lap.
"We are going to stick with we each other through the trial. We'll stay with each other till the end," Zach said quietly. His eyes were red and watery.
"Till the end, when death do we part," I confirmed.
