Chapter 10:
Aiden looked over his shoulder. He was watching the window, waiting. But what was he waiting for? Ace pinched my arm; I had almost forgotten that I was trapped in his arms.
"Will you put me down?" I asked. He frowned, his brows furrowed together, but he gently placed me down on the ground.
"But I was going to take you up my room to undress," Ace said pouting. I slapped his arm which only hurt my wrist.
"I'm capable of dressing myself!" I said, laughing. I looked over at the window at Aiden.
"What is with your brother?" I asked.
I waved my hand in front of Aiden's face, trying to gain his attention, but he didn't answer or even acknowledge my presence. It was if he couldn't see or feel anything.
"Don't mind him, honey. He spends a lot of time in his own head," Ace explained,
"Sometimes, you have even to hit him to get his attention." As if on cue, Ace's hand flung forward and he hit his brother. The force of the punch was so hard that Aiden fell back and his body flew across the room. His back hit the kitchen counter and he grasped it for support.
"What is your problem?" He asked, trying to keep himself from falling to the ground. He rubbed his chin as blood trickled down his face.
"I was trying to get your attention. You were staring at the window like a ghost," Ace said.
I felt like I was in daze, I never knew Ace had the potential be so violent and hit his own brother with such little effort. I could only imagine the damage he could do if he actually wanted to hurt Aiden. Aiden lifted himself back up with great strength.
"I was thinking about the trees. There are a few trees that are too close to the house. If they fall during the next storm, the power lines will be cut and the trees could potentially pierce through the house which could kill either one of us. I think I'll spend the day outside grooming the forest."
Aiden knew his way around the forest and as he promised, he spent the day grooming the forest.
Mean while, Ace went out to run some errands but he wouldn't disclose where he was going or when he would be back. Aiden swung his Axe down and I watched the muscles in his arms flex. His clothes were drenched in sweat and were clinging to him like a second skin. His eyes were bright and shimmering, he had the most brilliant blue eyes I had ever seen on a man. He emptied the left over wood into a wheelbarrow. He said that he could always use the left over wood for a fire.
"Why did you buy this house?" I asked, "The entire house looks as it could cave in. I'm not sure if it is even safe."
He didn't take the time or the energy to come up with a lie. "My father built the house. When he was twenty- six, he bought a piece of a farm land and proposed to my mother. The original house that he had built with his own two hands was beautiful, but the house has aged and deteriorated over time.
The original house had large stain glass windows in the kitchen and the entire room would come alive when the sun shined against the class. Unfortunately, those windows had to be replaced years ago. The guest bedroom opens up to the back yard. My father made that room for my mother, it was her writing room. She was a story teller and she could spend days in that room but she never left that room. For years and years, he supported her dreams.
