Kanan was starting to get a little bored with the rescue missions. While of course the rescues were indeed helpful, Kanan wanted some excitement back in his life.
After meeting Hera on Gorse, Kanan's life became somewhat, repetitive. Not to complain. He was happy with the new sense of family that Hera, Zeb, and Sabine had filled in his mind. But what filled his heart was the yearning for excitement that came with being on the run. And, yes, he was always looking over his shoulder for the Empire, but Kanan knew how to take down a few bucket heads by himself way before he met Hera.
"Specter five to specter one, come in." Sabines voice echoed from his belt. Kanan reached for his com-link and brought is towards his mouth.
"Go ahead specter five."
"Package has been moved. Repeat. The package has been moved." Kanan groaned in his throat and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"Just perfect. Can't anything go as planned?"
"Not when it's you're plan boss." A second voice chimed in.
"Just keep your eyes open for bucket heads Ze... specter four." Kanan took a breath. "Where has the package been taken specter five."
"Floor 2, cell block 238, cell number 23812."
"Copy that specter five. Specter one out." Kanan made his way to the nearest lift and pushed the button, while keeping an open eye out for any stormtroopers passing by. So far so good. Kanan thought as the lift opened and he stepped inside. Just another boring mission with the same boring outcome.
Kanan continued to walk down the imperial prison cell blocks, when he felt a strange presence within the force. Without a seconds thought, he began to focus on his surroundings trying to pin-point the location of the sudden presence. Before he could however, the presence disappeared as if it knew Kanan was trying to find it. Kanan quickly shut out his instinct to find it, because the more the mission continued, the more he was beginning to think this was all a trap.
Kanan finally got to the 238 cell block and began to look for 23812. After a good ten minutes, he found it, and approached the mechanic door. Before he opened it however, he heard movement behind him. He pulled out his saber and went a a defensive stance, but yet, again, nothing was there. He quickly but reluctantly returned his saber to his belt, and opened the prison cell door. What awaited him on the other side was a heartbreaking scene.
Two semi-young individuals were crouched on the ground embraced in each other's arms, protecting something in between them.
"No, please! Leave our son alone! He's taken enough of your torture! Please!" A feminine voice pleaded to Kanan.
"I'll take his place. Just, please. Don't hurt him anymore!" A male voice begged. Kanan walked up to the pair, and found out who they were protecting. In between the couple, who he assumed to be the parents, was a young boy, no more than ten, with brilliant blue eyes and raven blue hair.
"It's alright. I'm not here to hurt you." The woman looked up at Kanan and wiped her tear stained cheeks.
"Who are you?" Kanan jumped at a sudden sound, but answered the woman's question.
"Spector 1," he replied, still not looking directly at the couple, but towards the cell door opening. "I'm here to get you out of here.l, but I need you to trust me. Can you do that?" The woman was hesitant.
"How can we trust you if we don't even know your name?" Kanan sighed.
"For security purposes, I can't give you my name. But I can get you out of here. If you're willing to trust me." The man and the woman looked at each other and nodded.
"Yes, Spector 1," The woman looked up at Kanan. "My name is Mira, and this is Ephriam, and we trust you." Kanan nodded.
"Alright, follow me, keep your son close, and do exactly what I do." Kanan walked to the cell stairs and looked over his shoulder to spot any stormtroopers walking past. Kanan turned to the pair. "Okay, remember, do exactly what I do. And stay close.~*~*~*~
Hera was beginning to worry. Kanan should have been back by now, let alone had sent a signal.
"Hera, maybe you should try to contact him." Sabine suggested, while sitting in the co-pilots seat. But heat shook her head.
"We can't break protocol. When he signals, that's when we move in to take over, not anytime sooner."
"But what if something happened?" Sabine retorted. "We can't just sit here and do nothing!" Hera was about to end the conversation when she was interrupted by her com going off.
"Oh thank the force! Ka... Specter one, where,"
"No time Spector 2! We're under attack! Send backup!" Hera didn't even get a chance to give the order to her crew. Sabine and Zeb were already bulldozing their way through bucket heads, heading towards Kanan's location.
"Reinforcements are on their way Spector 1! Just hang on!"~*~*~*~
—Kanan barricaded the couple and the small boy between himself and the wall of the prison while Stormtroopers continued their merciless assault of blaster fire.
"Reinforcements are on their way Spector 2! Just hang on!"
"Copy that Spector 2. We'll be here." Kanan returned his com link to his belt and began to return blaster fire.
Mira didn't take her eyes off Kanan for more than a second since they had met. For some odd reason, she felt like she knew this man. She finally saw what looked to be a bird on the shoulder plate of his armor. She nudged her husband and he also recognized the symbol. Without thinking Mira spoke.
"Caleb?" Kanan froze at the sound of his birth name. He turned around and stared Mira dead in the eye.
"What did you say?" Mira smiled and wrapped her arms around the man.
"Oh Caleb! We thought we'd never see you again!" Kanan instinctively pushed the woman away.
"Look lady, I don't know who you think I am, but my name's not Caleb." The woman pointed to Kanan's shoulder guard.
"What is that?" Kanan looked to his shoulder and couldn't believe what was happening. In the middle of life and death this woman is asking about the painting on his armor?
"Are you serious?! We're about to be killed and the design on my armor is what your focused on?!" Mira looked hurt but tried to explain herself non the less.
"We lost our first born nearly 20 years ago to a special force known as the republic. His name was Caleb. And that design on your armor was our family crest." Kanan looked to his shoulder again. All these years he wondered why he had conjured up such a design. It felt imbedded on his since he could remember.
When Sabine asked him if she could paint something for him, he was very specific on how and what she did. And this was the result. But how could this couple be his parents? He was born into the republic. If he wasn't, there would have been a record of his removal from his birth family. But there was none. He looked again to the couple as Mira spoke again.
"Your name is Caleb, isn't it?! Your our son!"
"My name is Kanan, and I am not your son."—
