Chapter Twelve
I didn't move back or turn my head as he slowly inched closer to me. I closed my eyes and waited in anticipation, his lips almost touching mine.
"Hi!" A cheerful voice called out, making my eyes snap open and turn around. I turned to find Leah casually leaning against the door with her arms crossed.
Feeling slightly awkward at our near kiss, I turned to look at Gabriel, my face flushed in embarrassment and surprisingly disappointment.
He was glaring at Leah with a scowl on his face, letting out a frustrated sigh.
"I'm going to go in, thanks again for tonight Gabriel." I told him with a smile before slipping past Leah.
"Goodnight." He muttered looking away from Leah.
I gave him another small smile and looked at Leah, wondering why she wasn't coming in too.
"Give me a sec. I need to talk to him." She told me sending me a wink.
I rolled my eyes and walked in, heading straight for my bedroom so I could change and take off my heels. I quickly slipped into my pyjamas and a pair of slippers before heading for the living room.
"What was that all about?" Leah asked as I began tying my robe.
"What was what?" I asked as I began taking out my stud earrings.
"You and Gabriel moving closer to each other, you closing your eyes and puckering up. Gabriel's lips brushing yours softly and gently." Leah teased with a smirk on her face.
I felt my blush and I shook my head. "Shut up. Why were you even watching?"
"I was making sure you didn't do anything you'll regret."
"Right, sure you were. Little miss nosey." I rolled my eyes and sat down next to her.
"Hey. You and I both know if you snogged him you would have regretted it. I was saving you from yourself."
I shrugged and didn't say anything knowing that I probably would have regretted it. At that moment I wanted to kiss him, now, not so much. It would have complicated our already complicated relationship.
"So how was it? Where did he take you?" Leah questioned me, her eyes lit with excitement.
I groaned knowing I wouldn't be able to leave until I told Leah every little detail.

The next week flew by really quickly. Life was as normal as it could be. I still continued attending my classes and did most of my uni work at home. I avoided Josh as much as I could, it was a little hard since he was doing a post graduate degree in the same university as me but I tried my best. Everything was a mess and as cruel as it sounds I have no time or energy for him.
After that day Gabriel and I didn't go on any more 'dates' but he did call a lot and if I didn't answer his calls he would come straight to the house. It's very annoying but I'm slowly getting used to him.
I wish I could say the same for the baby. I've been starting to crave meat and a lot of it. If it was cooked meat then it would have been kind of normal but for some weird reason I keep craving raw meat which is disgusting. I didn't know if I should be getting craving now and if this is normal.
What was even worse was the urge to be near Gabriel. It wasn't in a sexual way, my body felt at ease when he was close to me. I had been feeling that before just a little bit, but now whenever he was close by I felt oddly comforted at the thought.
I didn't know what to think of it. Maybe it was just my hormones. I hoped it was just my hormones, I don't want to think of any other possibilities.
"Are you okay?" Gabriel concerned voice filled the car. "You've been staring at your hands for quite a while now."
I shook my head trying to clear my head. "Yeah, yeah I'm fine."
We were currently on our way to the hospital for the routine twelve week scan. I was a little nervous about it. I was petrified that we wouldn't find the heartbeat or there was something wrong with the baby.
Gabriel parked the car in the hospital parking lot and we both got out. We walked into the hospital in silence and made our way to the waiting area. I sat down on one of the chairs while Gabriel walked to the reception.
It had barely been a minute before Gabriel came back and motioned me to get up. "The doctor will see us now."
I shrugged and got up. At least we wouldn't have to wait a while before our turn especially since I had literally a litre of water an hour ago. Apparently it helps finding the baby if the bladder is full.
"Hello Nina, it's good to see you again." Dr Montgomery said with a warm smile. "Gabriel."
I felt a little confused when I just saw Dr Montgomery. Wasn't there supposed to be a sonographer instead of her? Or even a midwife? I didn't know too much about pregnancy and scans but I'm sure a sonographer usually does this.
"It's okay, she's qualified to do this." Gabriel muttered into my ears as if he had read my thoughts.
"Erm, okay." I said feeling uncertain about this. Dr Montgomery gave a reassuring smile and motioned to the bed.
I laid down on the bed while Gabriel came and sat beside me.
"Ready?" Dr Montgomery asked and I nodded and lifted my t-shirt up.
She squirted the cool gel on my stomach that was no longer flat. "This might feel a little uncomfortable but it won't hurt you. Just let me know if it hurts at all." Dr Montgomery told me as she typed something on the machine.
"Okay." I whispered as I stared at the monitor in anticipation. Dr Montgomery began moving the transducer around above my pubic line.
"Oh my god." I whispered as I looked at the monitor as saw the little baby moving around inside my belly. "Gabriel." I looked at him and smiled. "That's our baby."
Gabriel looked at me and gave me a small smile before looking back at the screen in concentration.
"We'll just check the baby's heartbeat."
I waited in anticipation and moments later the room was filled with a very loud and fast heartbeat. I felt my own heart speed up at the sound.
"Isn't it amazing?" I asked Gabriel as I stared at the screen.
"Yeah." He replied gruffly.
I looked at Gabriel and couldn't help but smile. I knew that he was just as stunned as I was. Dr Montgomery checked for abnormalities, took down measurements amongst other things. Dr Montgomery was quiet for a while as she checked everything which was taking quite a while.
"There's only one right?" I quickly asked, I prayed she said yes. One baby is more than enough, if there was two I think I'll go crazy.
Dr Montgomery laughed. "Yes, just the one. Everything looks good and your baby is growing perfectly. Congratulations."
I grinned widely and thanked her. After a few more observations we were finished. We were given a few copies of the photos and I couldn't take my eyes of it.
"I need to pee. I'll meet you outside the hospital." I told Gabriel as I shoved my copy of the photo into his hands.
"Wait."
"I really need to pee, I've been holding it in for the last 30 minutes!" I quickly shrieked heading for the nearest bathroom without waiting for his reply.
I found the bathroom and relieved myself. After I finished washing my hands, my phone vibrated. Thinking it was Gabriel I rolled my eyes and continued drying my hands using paper towels. After I was done I left the bathroom and unlocked my phone to check my messages.
It was Leah asking how things went. I quickly typed her a message before I put my phone back in my pocket.
I was heading for the exit of the hospital when I thought I saw someone familiar. I stopped and took a few steps backwards trying to get a better look.
The black haired woman was facing away from me writing something down on a paper. She turned giving me a side view of her face.
"Dr Lane?"
