Kevin turned out to be pretty much the nicest guy you could ever meet. He was enthusiastic, kind and elaborated on everything I needed to know for my first day. I couldn't help but feel inferior. I was boring and shy and I could tell he could feel my nervousness.
"So if you ever want to do anything to do with music, Josie pretty much rules the scene so I'd go to her." I hear Kevin say after spacing out a bit. "Yeah, music got it, thanks Kevin." I tell him, trying my absolute hardest to mean to. He puts his hand gently on my chest and I turn up to look at him. "Are you okay, Livvy? I know it is hard on your first day but you'll get used to it, the people here are great! and besides-" I had to cut him off. "Did you know Jason Blossom?" I ask him. Suddenly his shoulders slump and he looks defeated, "You heard about that huh?"
I try to smile, "I guess I was bound to at some point right?" I say. He returns my smile, "I didn't know him that well no, but everyone knew Jason, he was a Blossom after all, like Cheryl." He says, he nods behind me and I turn. I see a pretty young girl with red hair wearing the most glamorous clothes I think a high school has ever seen walk past me.
"His twin sister?" I ask, trying to remember what my dad briefly told me. He nods and looks around before continuing, "Look everyone here is still pretty concerned and going a bit crazy about it. I mean it's July 10th and no ones heard from him. Most people think he's dead. I'm sorry you had to arrive to Riverdale in the midst of all this."
I smile, not being able to not appreciate how kind he is, "Thank you so much, really." I have the overwhelming desire to hug him but I'm far too nervous to.
"Okay so where to next-" I turn around to hear Kevin call, "Hey watch out!" But it's too late. I've completely crashed into someone.
"Hey watch where you're going." I hear a voice snap. I look up to see a boy with dark hair and dark clothes. "I'm so sorry. Really I am." I tell the mystery boy. "She's new, Jughead, give her a break." Kevin says from behind me. The boy, Jughead, what an unusual name, turns to me. "Don't sweat it, New." He smiles. As he walks away I giggle a bit. "Wow, I haven't seen him smile in months." Kevin says. I turn back to him, "Let's continue the tour."
----
Kevin shows me to my first two classes of the day and I just sit at the back and try to ignore people like I usually do. Jughead ended up being in my English class and I smiled at him when I saw him. He looked quizzically at me before returning a smile, but we didn't talk. When recess finally came, Kevin was eagerly waiting outside my door. "The cafeteria here is the best!" He exclaims as we head towards it. Once we grab our food, I'm about to sit down when Kevin stops me. "No, no, come sit outside with me and my friends." He says. No one who's showed he around a new school has ever offered for me to sit with them. I can't help but feel strange, "Are you sure?" I ask him. He looks at me like I'm crazy, "Of course, Livvy, come with me." I do as he says and we walk outside before finding a table in the middle. "Hey guys, this is Livvy." Kevin announces my arrival at the table as he sits down. I think there's a chorus of heys but I barely hear them. I was far too busy staring at the guy sitting opposite Kevin. It was like the wind had been knocked from my lungs. To say he was handsome was not fair, he was practically a god. I could feel my heart begin to race and I really didn't like it. You've met Betty and Veronica," Kevin pauses before changing his attention to handsome god guy. "This is Archie, I don't think you guys have met."
Archie, who was looking at his computer, looks up at me and catches my eye, for a few seconds it seems like nothing else is happening but us looking at each other. He clears his throat. "Hey nice to meet you." He says, extending his hand. "You too. I'm Livvy, it's really nice to meet you." The most beautiful laugh escapes his lips and I feel like an idiot for acting so weird.
The conversation continues on and despite my feeling a little confident I found myself being continuously left out of this conversation. Archie then begins to play a song from his laptop and I find myself really liking it. When he stops playing I smile. "Woah that's amazing, who is that?" I ask. He looks a bit flustered and is about to reply before Kevin does, "Its him." I beam at him, "Its incredible." He shakes his head, "Its rough." I shake my head, "no way. So is that your thing? Music? Are you doing something with that?" I ask him. He runs his hand through his hair, "Yeah that's the plan." He looks at me a bit longer before shaking his head and packing up his things. "Hey guys I should go, I have that meeting with Grundy and football tryouts."
I'm incredulous. "You play football too? What don't you do?" I laugh. He smiles before waving, "Bye guys." Veronica, Betty and Kevin all start whispering to each other and all I can hear at the last second is, "and don't talk about Archie." It spikes my curiosity. "What's wrong with Archie?" I ask the three. Veronica turns to me, "Well I'm new too so I don't know that much but apparently Betty and Archie are a thing." She smiles.
For some reason, I feel my heart drop. "Oh really? Wow." I say. "Well she likes him a lot." Kevin clarifies. I'm a bit confused now. "We are trying to get her to ask him to the dance but she's way too scared." I'm about to say something when we're interrupted.
"Veronica Lodge and Livvy Torres, I'd heard whisperings." I look up to see Cheryl Blossom standing over us. "I'm Cheryl Blossom, may I sit?" She asks, looking over at Betty, "Oh Betty would you mind?" She asks, gesturing her to move over.
"So what are you four hens gossiping about? Archie's Efron-esque emergence from the chrysalis of puberty? Extracurriculars? Weatherbee wants me to sign up for a few."
Betty leans forward, "Cheerleading?" She asks. "You must. I'm senior captain of the River Vixens." Cheryl says although she's looking between Veronica and I. Kevin narrows his eyebrows, "Is cheerleading still a thing?" Cheryl shoots him a look of ice. "Is being the gay best friend still a thing?" She fires back. Woah, that's rude. "Some people say it's retro, I say it's eternal and iconic." Veronica smiles, "im in. Betty, Livvy, you have to try out too." I try to smile but am too nervous to. Cheryl smiles, "Of course. Anyone's welcome to try out but Betty's got so much on her plate right now and being a Vixen's a full time thing." She says looking at Betty. Woah this girl doesn't hold back, I mean I know her brother's missing but wow. "But open to all! Follow me on twitter and I'll do the same, my handle is @ cherylbombshell." She clasps her hands together with joy. She turns to leave but I feel the need to stop her. "Hey Cheryl." I call out. The others seem as surprised as myself that I called her back. "Yes, Livvy?" She asks simply, like I've known her my whole life. "I'm sorry. About Jason." I say slowly. Kevin and Betty look horrified maybe scared that I brought it up. And not going to lie. I'm scared too. Cheryl's demeanour changes and she seems more vulnerable. "Right. Thanks." She says simply before walking away. "Wow I thought she was gonna chew your head off" Kevin said when she walked away as he wrapped an arm around me. I laughed, maybe this year, cheerleading tryouts, fitting into a grieving town and trying not to think about a handsome redheaded boy would be better than I thought. Maybe.
