I am a woman.
I am a woman in the way I walk & speak & carry myself.
Not with poise & grace.
No I am woman for the way I speak passively & smile thinly at the catcallers so they don't get offended & decide to come show me how to "lighten up" because. after all I'd be prettier if I smiled.
I am woman for the way I walk, quickly. Heel toe heel toe so as to not be caught outside after dark without an escort because then I might be asking for it.
I am woman for the way I grit my teeth when I see men walking by.
I am woman for being told to "stop being a bitch" when I voice my opinion
I am woman for being "too emotional" & crying when I hear about another black brother or sister being killed by our own police; I am emotional for mourning those lost in Orlando. I am woman for FEELING COMPASSION.
I am woman for my inner strength to protest despite the jokes & the memes & the labels.
I am woman & I am afraid of losing rights to my own body.
I am woman & I will rise above & protect my rights for myself, my sisters, my mother, my neighbors, my own 2 daughters who will one day be.. Woman.
