Chapter One

It was just another ordinary crisp morning in Atlanta GA. The sun was shining, the birds chirped, and a low fog held just above the ground. It was early springtime, bumble bees buzzed along from flower to flower. Everything was in bloom.

Rachelle left her house in her school clothes and walked a few blocks to her bus stop, like she did every day. Not long after she arrived, she was joined by her best friend Jason. Jason was a tall slender boy, with long, curly black hair while Rachelle was a short ordinary 14 year old brown haired green eyed girl. It was very ironic these two should be friends, Rachelle coming from a broken home while Jason had everything he wanted handed to him on a silver platter.

“What took you so long hotshot?” Rachelle smiled as she ran to greet her best friend. Though she’d never admit it to anyone, she had feelings for Jason, feelings she wished she could bury deep down and forget about.

“Had to stop for breakfast, want some?” He presented a bag of Krispy Kreme’s and a Styrofoam cup of hot chocolate from behind his back. She accepted the treats and sat down on the sidewalk to wait for the bus. While she ate, they had a friendly conversation about the upcoming musical auditions. Rachelle was trying out for the female lead and Jason was trying out for the male lead. This was typical for the two friends, they did everything together.

They had met a year before when Rachelle joined the drama club, they understood each other so well they instantly became besties. They had wanted to visit each other outside of school but Rachelle’s strict parents prohibited any boys over at their house, unless they were her Brother Chris’s friends.

“Oh, here comes the bus.” Jason informed Rachelle, they both got up and collected their things as the bus crawled up to the curb. When the door swung open, Jason, ever a gentleman, stood aside as Rachelle entered the bus first. She thanked him and they made their way to their usual seats in the back of the bus. These were always the first seats claimed on a school bus because of the distance that separated them from the driver, so Jason and Rachelle were lucky to be the first stop.

They continued to make small talk as the bus made its normal routine, stop, pick up, and go ritual. The bus hit a pothole in the road and Rachelle fell over onto Jason, she couldn’t help but notice hoe nice he smelled. All at once, Rachelle wanted desperately for Jason to love her.

‘Maybe I should tell him,’ she thought, ‘no, he’d never like a girl like me. A girl with a broken family, cuts on her wrists, holes in her heart. He deserves someone better. “Like Amber.” She accidentally said it out loud.

“What about her?” Jason asked, concerned.

“Nothing, I was just thinking out loud.” She tried to cover, he wasn’t buying it.

“What were you thinking about her for?”

Crap! Now what? “Umm, I was just wondering why girls like her hate me so much.”

“Amber doesn’t hate you, she just, um.…”

“Hates me.”

“Yeah, but don’t take it too hard, that’s just more time for me to hang out with you.” Jason wondered if he was being too forward. He like Rachelle, he just didn’t know how to tell her. He wasn’t even sure she liked him back. ‘Why do girls have to be some complicated?’ he thought. ‘She’s way out of my league anyway.’

“We should play a game” Jason said, “Say the first word that pops into your head.”

            “Ok, diamond.”

            “Jewelry.”

            “Rings.”

            “Marriage.”

            “Happiness.”

            “Flowers.”

            “Daisies.”

            “Roses.”

            “Romance.”

            “Love.”

Rachelle hesitated before answering. There was an awkward pause before she blurted out, “Jason, do you like me?” She knew instantly it was a mistake, why did she say that? ‘Of course he doesn’t like you, you’re not worth it.’

“Umm, well, you’ve kind of put me on the spot here.” Jason was freaking out. How did she know? He’d been so discreet, people buy each other breakfast all the time, right? Just because I picked her up all the time, and tickled her doesn’t mean I was flirti…. OMG I was totally flirting with her! How do I cover this? “Umm, well, I think you’re very beautiful, but I don’t really do relationships.”

“Oh. Thanks I guess.” Now she’d gone and done it, now nothing would ever be the same…

“So, umm, do you like me?” The least he could do was try.

“Yeah…” Rachelle said with a nervous tone in her voice. ‘This is so embarrassing.’

“Oh.”

They rode in an awkward silence the rest of the way to school. When they finally arrived they dismounted the bus and went their separate ways. It was very unusual for them to be acting this way, and people took notice.

“Why aren’t you with Jason?” Rachelle’s friends would ask her.

“Is Rachelle like, absent or something?” Jason was asked.

This went on all day. On the bus ride home, the two didn’t even sit together. ‘I’m so stupid.’ Rachelle told herself on the ride home. ‘Things will never be the same…’

‘She likes me back! But, now what? I wish I knew what I know now when she asked me if I like her. UGH…I told her I don’t do relationships, so now what do I do? I can’t ask her out, she’ll think I’m a liar.’

The two got off at their stop and, like earlier that day, they went their separate ways. When Jason got home he got out his phone and texted Rachelle.

Hey. I know I said I don’t do relationships, but I didn’t know you liked me when I said that. Do you think we could give it a try?

Within seconds, she replied-

YES! And srry I put u on the spot ther :/
