Rachelle and Jason walked into drama one morning to a very happy Mrs. Casser.

“Ok class, listen up I have some very exciting news. You all know that out one act performance for the school was extremely successful. Well, I’ve decided to enter it in the Jr. Thespian Festival! Here are your permission slips, the registration fee is 20 dollars and the competition will take place on November 6th. Any parents who want to chaperone can call me.”

“Wow, I can’t believe we get to go to competition! This will be so much fun.” Rachelle told Jason.

“Yeah, I just hope it won’t be too stressful to keep working on the one act and the musical at the same time.”

“Eh, I’m sure it will be fine.”

NOVEMBER 6TH-

Rachelle and Jason were sitting together on the bus on the way to competition.

“I’m sooo nervous Jason.”

“Don’t be, you’ll do great.” An hour later they arrived and got registered. They were shown to a room where they put their costumes and props. They ran their lines a few times and broke for lunch.

"Do you wanna go see some other performances Rachelle?"

"No, not right now. Maybe after lunch." So after lunch they went to see another school's one act. It was FANTASTIC!

"Oh my God! We are toast, those guys were amazing!" Now Rachelle was even more worried.

"Rachelle we are gonna do great, you'll see. When they left the theater they were escorted to a private room to do their stage makeup and get into costume. Rachelle helped the boys with their makeup after she finished hers.

"Troop 88680 you're on in five." A stage assistant said and left to get people seated. Rachelle went white as a sheet, she had never in her life been afraid to perform in front of an audience but now, she was terrified.

"Jason, who's my character again?"

"Oh no, you can't remember?"

"No."

"Ok, you're Laura, Emily's mom-"

"Right! Ok, now I got it, I'm good."

"Good because we're on." They went through the one act with only a few minor mistakes and were very confident they could win.

"Wow, guys that was really great." Mrs. Casser said. "Now, we still have a few hours before the closing ceremonies so feel free to relax and enjoy your time here."

Rachelle squirmed in her chair, waiting for the ceremony to start. Jason grabbed her hand and kissed it, a silent signal that calmed Rachelle right down. After a few minutes a man walked on stage.

"Attention, ladies and gentleman, thespians and judges. I would like to thank you all for coming and participating in this year's Jr. Thespian Festival. Now, I know our students are all nervous to see what their ratings are and who will be moving on to state competition, so lets get to it. Troop 87964, excellent! Troop 98022, Superior! Troop 72644, Superior and troop 88680... 'this is it' Superior! Now, we can only send two one acts to state so of our three superiors, one will unfortunately not proceed. The troops that have been chosen to go are... 98022 and 72644, congratulations! Please come to the stage."

The rest of the ceremony was a blur to Rachelle, she really thought they had a chance when they announced that TWO troops could proceed. When the ceremony was over, they all climbed silently onto the bus. Jason tried to talk to Rachelle but she just stared out the window as it started to rain. After about 30 minutes they stopped for dinner, but Rachelle wasn't hungry. Finally they arrived back at the school where Rachelle's mom picked her up. She knew immediately they didn't win and drove home without a word.
