Later that night, Jason called Rachelle.

“Hello?”

“Hey Rachelle its me. How are you?”

“I’m good. I need to tell you something though.”

“Of course. Anything.”

“Well, I just want to let you know that I don’t want to have sex until I’m married.”

“Well I totally respect that and I’m glad you were up front about it.”

“You don’t have a problem with that, do you?”

“No no of course not! I really do respect that decision.”

“Thanks.”

“I wanted to ask you about Maddie. You know she likes me, right.”

“Oh crap! I completely forgot about Maddie! She’s my best friend! How am I supposed to tell her we’re dating? It’ll crush her.”

“Ok, so we just don’t tell anyone.”

“Well people are going to find out, they always do. And I don’t want Maddie to hear it from someone else, I think we should tell her together.”

“Ok, that sounds good, should we do it tomorrow?”

“Yeah, when we see her before school we’ll tell her first, then everyone else.”

“Alright! Nice plan!”

“Thanks, but umm, can I ask you a question?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, you’re so popular you could have any girl in the school. Why did you pick me?”

“Umm, well you’re beautiful to start. You are smart, spunky, outgoing, and you have the most amazing voice. You are also really talented at acting.”

“Thanks, I’m not really used to getting complements.”

“Then I will complement you everyday.”

“Thanks. There is one more thing that you need to understand if we are going to be dating.”

“Anything, it would be totally worth it.”

“Ok, but this is really personal, you can’t tell ANYONE.”

“I understand.”

“Well, I drink…”

“YOU WHAT?”

“Please don’t be mad. I have good reasons.”

“What reasons, you’re like the happiest person I know.”

“I only act that way in front of people, I’m actually really depressed. You see, my dad isn’t exactly what you would call the best father figure. He… hits Chris and me. And he screams nasty things, especially at Chris. He honestly would never bother me, but I stand in front of Chris on purpose. He’s little and could never take the kinds of punches I get. I’m just trying to protect him because he’s really my only family. My mom is ok, but she just ignores the fact that her children are being abused.”

“Well why don’t you call the police?”

“Because my mom doesn’t make enough money to support us so we would get taken away from her. We would get put into the foster system and most likely get separated. I could end up halfway across the country. I would never see you, Chris or my mom ever again.”

“I’m really sorry. I wish there was something I could do to help.”

“Me too.”

“You don’t…cut, do you?”

“Ummmm….maybe? Kinda, yeah.”

“Oh Rachelle, I wish I was with you so that I could wrap you up in my arms and comfort you.”

“Me too.”

“Well, I’ve got to go, I really need to get some sleep, but I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

That night, for the first time in years, Rachelle didn’t have night terrors. Instead she dreamed about Jason. She dreamed they were at their bus stop together and she was wrapped up in her arms. He was speaking, softly to her. Telling her how he wished he could be with her all the time so her could protect her. Then, her lifted up her arm, pushed her sleeve back and kissed every single one of her cuts. He was gentle, his lips were soft. Then, they just sat there silently and waited for the bus…

A/N: This chapter is a little short but it was very revealing and it got really deep. I want to share a quote that I heard that really fits this part of the story.

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” –Dr. Suess
