When I got home, it was about 6 o'clock. I wasn't in any mood to talk. My arms were sore from carrying home blueberry muffins as a treat for mother. I just wanted to go and lay down and cry about my life to Angelica. Unfortunately, my mother had other plans.

"Where have you been? Do you have any idea how worried I was?" My mother demanded. I flinched. I had to choose my words carefully.

"Mother, I was working. I also got some blueberry muffins for you." I said, knowing that mother loved blueberry muffins. Her face instantly brightened as she reached for the bag with three muffins inside it.

"Yes, well a text would have been nice." My mother said, greedily wolfing down a muffin. I nodded seriously. Thank god I had the muffins to save me from punishment this time. I really have to be more careful though.

"I'm sorry mother. You look beautiful, by the way." I told her as I took in her white sundress and sandals. It was a little cold to be wearing a sundress, but she looked nice anyway. As soon as I complimented her, she beamed at me.

"I think Richie's going to take me somewhere special! Maybe pop the question?" My mother told me. My mouth fell open, which she took as a good sign. Richie was my mom's no good boyfriend. He was just interested in her money. He's also the one who got her hooked on weed. I hated Richie.

"Um that's great!" I lied. Mother beamed at me and went to sit down on the couch to watch television. I started up the stairs, when her voice stopped me.

"Oh, and that Jackson? He's a keeper. You guys would look cute together." My mother said, turning her head towards me and winking. I blushed red. Mother never talked about boys to me. I thought she didn't want me to date anyone. I smiled in response and ran up the stairs. My mother was surprisingly thoughtful today.

I think she's really happy about Richie. No matter how much of a douche bag he is, I think she really likes him. Although, I can't say the same about him. He looks at other women when he's with her and she pretends like she doesn't notice, but she does. I think it's nice that mother is getting what she finally deserves: love.

My mother's step-father was abusive to her when she was little. He always made her feel unwanted. He would physically abuse her to the point she had to be taken to the hospital almost weekly. Her mother begged her not to tell, or her step dad would be taken to jail. As much as my mother despised her step dad, she wanted her mother to be happy.

According to my grandmother, my step grandfather was a cheater. He eventually got caught and suffered a law suit from my grandmothers company. He was arrested for a robbery. My grandmother immediately filed for a divorce. Within two months of the divorce, my grandparents had gotten back together. Although my mother got the family she'd always wanted, she was still affected by the physical and mental abuse. That was probably why she used the same methods on me.

The bell rang downstairs, shaking me from my thoughts. Downstairs, my mother hurried to get the door, her sandals flapping against the uncarpeted floor. I watched from the stairs as she gave Richie a hug and locked the door. Sighing, I made my way upstairs and completed my homework before falling into a deep sleep.

My mood had improved greatly since my little talk with my mother. She had not come home last night, which I took as a good sign. It was not often that my mother looked so happy or showed signs of love. I was happy after such a long time, even Angelica noticed.

"You're looking happy today." Angelica commented as she flipped through a magazine. She opened up to a page and kissed the face of some random dude. "Hello, my love." She whispered to the picture. I wrinkled my nose. My best friend had serious issues.
