friday. june 12th, 1959.
friday was an unusually quiet day. her parents had left a few days ago on wednesday for their business trip and the hogan siblings were left to their own devices as usual.
the previous school year that had just passed brought graduation for june. at seventeen years old she had graduated when she never thought she would. her grades weren't good enough to get her anywhere particularly special but they made her parents and brother proud.
sitting at the dining table with newspapers spread open around her and a pen in hand, june was searching the job ads. castle rock felt like a place that you go to die. it's not somewhere you want to live out the rest of yourself. as a child it seemed so promising but as you grew, you realized how small it really was.
the sound of her brother charlie stomping down the stars brought her attention out of the dining room. when she got to the main hall, charlie was there throwing on his jacket.
"where are you going?" june asked in curiosity. the clock on the wall read 6:30pm. charlie looked at her as he decided what to say.
"a party," was all he responded with.
"are you going to drink?" his sister asked, in an almost quiet voice. charlie just shot her a deadpanned look as if to say, 'yes, dumbass.'
"how will you get home?" june inquires. her older brother frowned at her and sighed.
"look kid, the party is at aces house. if it makes you feel better i'll have billy pick me up and i'll call you to pick me up at the end of the night. that way my hammered ass ain't on the road, okay?" charlie said.
"okay," june nodded. charlie snatched up the notepad by the phone on the wall and scribbled down an address that june figured was aces. charlie then grabbed the phone and dialed billy, explaining the new ride situation.
june wandered back to the dining room to continue job searching while charlie sat in the living room to wait. after ten minutes june heard the sound of a car beeping outside and the front door opening.
"i'm leaving!" charlie yelled.
"be careful! love you!" june yelled back.
"love you too!" he responded before the front door slammed. every time charlie went out, june worried. considering their parents weren't around to worry, someone had to do it. charlie and june have been close since childhood. when there was finally another baby in the house charlie was in love. he knew he would want to protect her for the rest of his life. the duo had always been two peas in a pod, their friendship and love for each other never wavering.
