sunday. june 14th, 1959.
when junebug heard the sound of a truck pulling up the long gravel driveway, she snatched her bag off the hook and ran out the door. her long, orange locks floated behind her as she ran.
"thank god you came early, charlie is being dumb." june said as she opened the truck door.
"well, i was going to be all gentlemen like and get you from the door and escort you but gee, i see how it is." eyeball teased. june lightly punched his shoulder and put on her seatbelt.
"let's get going, i can feel charlie staring from the front window." june rolled her eye while eyeball stuck his head out the window.
"hi charlie!" eyeball yelled loudly before chuckling and backing out of the driveway. the girl beside him covered her face with her hands in embarrassment.
as they drove down the winding backroads, the two sat in a comfortable silence, each lost in their own minds. it wasn't too long before they arrived at their wanted destination.
before the physical bridge started, there was a plot of land were the grass was all smashed down for you to park. the bridge itself was no longer strong enough to hold a vehicle so you either went around or parked and hung out.
eyeball jumped out of the car and pulled out the fishing poles while june grabbed the small picnic basket she had made up along with an old radio. the two quietly made their way down to the rickety old bridge.
"do you know how to fish?" eyeball asked, glancing at the girl next to him. the redhead only shrugged.
"sort of, but not really. when i used to go with charlie i was always afraid of the hook." the girl laughed at herself as she explained. after getting to the middle of the bridge, they both sat down on the creaking wood.
for the next half an hour, eyeball carefully and meticulously explained the art of fishing. he made sure to teach her the proper way to handle the sharp bait hook so that it wouldn't snag your hand or someone else's.
as the minutes ticked on and they couldn't get any fish to bite, june sat her fishing pole next to her and began to fiddle with the radio. eyeball watched her carefully, amusement filling his features.
"what the fuck are you doin'?" he asked with a chortle. june stuck her tongue out slightly as she tried to concentrate on getting a station and not static. the antenna was going all over the place and had even stabbed eyeball one too many times.
"maybe the fish want music," she finally responded once the sound of singing took over the static. at that moment, june's fishing pole would have flew into the water if eyeball wouldn't have quickly snatched it up.
"holy shit, maybe they do!" eyeball laughed out, handing the pole to june quickly. "c'mon! reel it in, you can do it!" he encouraged.
once the line finally rose up, a small fish was hanging from the end. "i did it! i caught a fish! im the fish whisperer!" june yelled, her laughter filling up the quiet land around home.
eyeball carefully removed the hook from the fishes mouth and waved the creature at the girl next to him. "wanna touch 'em?" he asked. june's eyes went wide.
"no way!" she protested only for eyeball to bring the fish closer to the girl who yelped and scooted away until the laughing boy threw the fish back into the water.
after a few more minutes of fishing, the two decided to dig into the picnic basket. "im having a great time, eye. thank you for taking me here." the redhead said, gesturing around her.
eyeball rubbed the back of his next sheepishly and shrugged. "it's not a big deal. this is one of my favorite places to come and just well, just be."
"tell me something about where you come from." june said suddenly.
"what do you mean?" eyeball asked hesitantly.
"your life outside the cobras. who are you really?" she inquired.
eyeball tiredly rubbed his fists over his eyes like a small child. "you don't even want to know, sweets. you would run screaming if i told you about my life and my home."
"i wouldn't. deep down i think you know it too, you just don't want to admit it." the girl said, taking a bite of the sandwich in her hands.
the boy across from her laughed a fake laugh and shrugged. "maybe one day i'll tell you. maybe." june just grinned at him. soon after eating the duo packed up their things and walked back to eyeballs truck.
the ride home was quiet and peaceful, the radio was playing softly and they were both humming. once they got to the girls house, they stared at each other for a moment.
gently she placed her hand on his, softly squeezing it. "you can trust me, richard. i promise." and with that she got out of the car and walked inside.
