Emily Osment as Emerson Sexton.
Emerson's Pov
I was sitting at the kitchen table drinking my cup of coffee before I go back out in town to find another job. As much as I would rather be home with my children, but times are hard now and that was only the icing on the cake for my family. My mom raised me and my older brother by herself when our father up and left us when I was only 12 years old. My brother Brett was 14 at the time. But mom worked her butt off to get the little things that we have. My mom works night at the cafe shop here in town and my older brother who is having a hard time finding another job as well is just staying on the couch all the time.
But as much as I would love to stay home with my kids, but I can't. I need a job. I have 3 kids already that count on me for everything. My oldest son Riker is already 10. Then my other son Arlo is 8 and my youngest son Finn is 2. Funny looking back when I was that young. I had my first son at 15. The kids dad and I was high school sweethearts. Well more me then him. David don't have much to do with the kids. That's why the kids and I are living back home with mom and Brett. But she only has a 3 bed room trailer and with 3 kids and 3 adults this place is way to small for all of us.
I looked over and saw that that it was already going on 8 in the morning. My mom should be coming home in another 30 minutes. I'm going to try to find a job today before my mom has to go back to work again. I got up to get some meat out of the freezer for diner tonight. I opened it up and only saw we only had a small thing of hamburgers and one thing of pork chops. I hope mom got enough tips from the cafe to get some food with. I wouldn't be getting my food stamps for another 5 days and I know that won't last us until then.
I was looking in the food pantry when my mom walked into the house. I looked over at her and I knew she was tired. I got her a cup of coffee and sat it down on the table. Mom smiled at me. We might have been poor, but mom did a great job with Brett and I. She make me the mother I am to my boys.
"How was work mom?" I asked her. She looked over at me and smiled.
"I got fired." She told me.
"What? Why?" I asked her. This can't be happening now. I mean my mom is the only one with income coming into this house. My brother lost his job when the factory went under and no one want's to give a high school drop out a job.
"I'm to old to be working there. That's what the boss told me." Mom said to me. My mom is only 55 years old. And I for a fact that most people that goes into that cafe love my mom.
"That's bull shit." I said to her. My mom pulled my hand over to her and kissed my hand.
"We will be fine. Tomorrow I will go back out there and find me another job." Mom said to me. I looked over at her.
"I'm sorry mom." I said to her.
"Well, I can't go with out a job. I have my family to think about and--" Mom looked over at the small thing of hamburger I got out for diner tonight.
"What do you call that?" Mom asked me. I looked over at her.
"That's all we have." I said to her.
"How much money do you have on your link card?" Mom asked me.
"$2.12." I said to her. I only get $220 a month on my link and I try to make that last us all for the month, but for some reason the lowered my link down to $100.
"I made $53 in tips. The car has a full tank of gas, so get food with this." Mom said to me handing me all of her money. I looked up at her.
"Thank you mom." I said to her.
