This was a mistake. I don't know why I wanted so badly to prove anything to Jax. Maybe it was because Milo and Maya were watching and I felt like I had to act tough, or maybe it was just my pent-up frustration with always being pathetic. But either way, I had agreed to a very, very stupid thing.

When Jax dared me to wear this outfit, I don't think he actually expected me to agree. In fact, when I said I would, he seemed to regret challenging me in the first place. For a second, I thought he'd actually tell me not to, but I suppose better judgment came over him and he decided to let me go.

Not that I needed his permission or anything. We were not remotely close enough for him to give me fashion advice.

"Wow, Jax is totally talking to you now!" Maya exclaimed, just as we pulled up to Anthony's large house. Music was throbbing, and I wondered how no one had called the cops by now. I was so screwed.

I felt extremely uncomfortable as I looked down at my dress. I would much rather wear a baggy t-shirt and some pajama bottoms than this despicable thing. In fact, literally anything would be better than this despicable thing.

I regret ever agreeing to go to this dang party.

"We only talk a little. It's still weird," I replied.

"When did this start happening? I swear, Alyssa, he never talks to anyone in our house. How did you start being friends again?" She asked desperately, stepping out of the car.

"We're not friends. He doesn't even like me. We're just speaking to each other because..." I trailed off, unsure of how much to say. Should I tell her about Mrs. Maxwell and the library? Should I mention that she left something behind for me, and I need Jax's help to find it? "Because there's some unfinished business with Chloe." This time, Maya turned wide eyes on me.

"Like what?"

"Like she kind of gave me the library."

"The library in the mansion? She just gave it to you?"

"It was in her will." Maya's wide eyes widened even more, but before she could say anything, Blair interrupted.

"Maya, glad you could make it," he told her, giving her a flirtatious grin before setting his eyes on me. He choked on the beer in his hands, and I felt my blush return to me. "Alyssa...shit you look great." Talking about Jax and the library with Maya had distracted me from my inadequate amount of clothes on for a second, but I was now feeling the full brunt of it. I hated the way he shamelessly checked me out before allowing me entrance into Anthony's gigantic home. The Meyers were located in the rich neighborhood, of course, so this wasn't far from Jax's place. Still, I was extremely unnerved as I went inside. The parlor was packed with students, whether they were crowding idly on the floor or sitting on the stair rail. Most, however, had gone into the den to snack on Chex mix and chug beer bottles.

"I'm gonna get a drink," Maya told me, bending down briefly to strap her heels back into place. I knew that she was tactically giving Blair a front-row view of her generous booty, and of course, he drunk in the sight like I would expect him to. When she stood back up, she asked, "Do you want me to get you one?"

"No, I'm good," I said. I didn't drink, and not just because it was technically illegal at my current age. Being with an alcoholic like Troy who was constantly under the influence of beer, I never developed a taste for it. I couldn't stand the memories that it brought back to me.

Maya just shrugged and stalked off, looking far too excited to be here. I - on the other hand - just wanted to leave. Even in the darkness that was only obstructed by some expensive-looking strobe lights, I could sense eyes on me. Whether that was because of my dress or because I never attended these kind of parties, I didn't know. But I didn't wish to find out.
