Chapter 1
~Beware, beware, be skeptical.
Of their smiles, their smiles so plated in gold.
Deceit so natural
But a wolf in sheep's clothing is more than a warning!~
Music blares out, into Ashley's headphones, the green scenery zooms on past the what was once a school bus now turned RV. She drums her fingers to the beat, waiting to reach her new home.
"Look kiddo! Just 30 more miles and we're home. I wonder how the women are like at Bullworth." Uncle Matthew claims ecstatically, waggling his eyebrows, glancing at me now and then through the rear view mirror.
He is talking nonsense, driving all day and all night causes sleep deprivation to affect his mind. Ashley snorts, 'Sleep deprived or not, Uncle has women on his mind 24/7.'
"Pay attention to the road will you Matthew?" Father distracted on his own devices, lazily asks.
Uncle smirks, "Aren't you a tab bit curious about the women? I mean, there's nothing compared to the women back in California, but New England? We're about to find out."
Father grows agitated, "Seriously Matthew, that's what is going on in your head right now?"
They're bickering has the volume of the iPod increased to maximum. Traveling 3,242.9 miles from California to New Hampshire in a tricked out school bus for 4 and a half days has everyone on edge. This family is not meant to be confined in a vehicle for days on end. The togetherness forced upon the trio became a lesson well learned: personal boundaries are not to be abused ever again. It would have been easier on everyone to have flown and arrive within 6 hours, but Matthew's constant badgering for a family road trip wore down the father and daughter. Personally, Ashley would have preferred to be flying in First Class watching a few films, but she admires her uncle's passion for adventure and couldn't help but give in quicker than her Father had done.
'WELCOME TO BULLWORTH'
Ashley releases a breath of relief after seeing the welcoming sign. As much as she loves her father and uncle, their obnoxious squabble infuriates her. Her headphones could be made into a lovely noose right about now...
Shaking her head of that depressing thought, she rests her head on the table in attempts to ease her incoming headache. The loud music isn't enough to drown out her family. Sudden white flashing light wakes her from her small nap. Matthew has installed light signalers to catch her attention whenever she dozes off with headphones on.
She pauses her music. Yes Uncle?
"You start school soon, how are you feeling? I've heard Bullworth Academy is a great school with great sports." Matthew breaks the silence. He never liked the quiet, finds it too suffocating.
As Ashley was about to respond, her father answers the question for her. "It doesn't matter whether the school has sports of not, she's just glad that she will be attending an academy with high academic standards, along with their well known business program."
'Oh boy.' Ashley braces herself for what is about to happen next. "I do believe that question was directed to my lovely niece, whose feelings and opinions are valued." Matthew spits out hotly. "She is about to spend the next few years in high school, the most crucial years for all teens. It does matter whether or not she will be happy."
Father frowns deeply, not pleased with his younger brother's tone of voice, "I will have you know-"
Matthew rudely cuts him off, no longer in the mood to deal with his older brother's nagging. "Ash, how about some tunes? You still into the Red Hot Chili Peppers right?" He slips in the CD into the disc compartment, not expecting a reply from his niece whose face tells she would rather choke on her own saliva than put up with another round of insults. The tip of Father's ears are tinted red, meaning he is more than upset.
"Don't you cut me off when I am speaking to you Matthew Aiden Smith!" Father barks.
"What!? I can't hear you over the booming sound of the Peppers!" Matthew yells over the not so loud music, even though Father sat right next to him in the passenger seat. Again, another round of arguing sparks between the two twin brothers.
'This is getting ridiculous.' Ashley thinks to herself, huffing out a tired breath. In a span of 4 days, her father and uncle have engaged in a total of 35 arguments, most of them had to do with Matthew's overbearing need to bug the crap out of his twin, out of spite for moving the family across the States. Her father's usual calm and collected temperament has long worn off, he is now very easily annoyed at anything his idiotic brother does. Hell, he even gets ticked off with Matthew's loud breathing.
'Just 20 minutes.' Ashley's mantra plays itself within her mind, in hopes of time and space granting her wish to be home soon.
"Mom only loved you because she had too!" She hears her uncle's fail attempt to dishearten her father.
"What does that have to do with anything!"
She resumes playing the rest of her song:
~So tell me how you're sleeping easy
How you're thinking of yourself?
Show me how you justify
Telling all your lies like second nature
Listen, mark my words: one day (one day)
You will pay, you will pay
Karma's gonna come collect your debt
Karma's gonna come collect your debt
Oh, Oh, Oh
Karma's gonna come collect your debt.~
