The scrutinising looks disappeared slowly as I made my way towards Matt, who was leaning against my locker, talking to one of his team mates from the basketball team.I snuck up behind him and pounced on his back, the way I did when we were kids.
'Ash!God you're heavy!'
I scrambled down, straightening my shirt and giggling at the same time.'Move! You're in front of my locker!'
'I know doofus we have first period English together today.'
'Oh yeah, just give me a second...'
'DING DING DING!...your second's over,'he shot back in a duh tone, before I could turn to my locker.Rolling my eyesight at his childishness,I take out myself books and stuff then in my bag.
I turn back to find Matt talking to another guy from the basketball team.I swear this guy cannot last a second without being social.Knowing,he would probably continue his conversation despite the ringing of the school bell and get us late,I grab his hand and pull him with me.'Matt's sorry,he'll be late for his class! He'll continue this conversation later!' I yell behind my back.
Realising that I was practically dragging Matt and pacing towards our class,I slowed down to allow him to catch up.When he was finally in step with me,I turned to face him to lecture him on the importance of punctuality but instead burst out laughing at the sight of his face.He was panting and his perfectly jelled hair was now all over the place.'Damn it woman! You know how long it takes to look so perfect?'I raised an eyebrow at him, clearly amused at his statement.'What?Nobody wakes up this perfect.I mean look at me,I've got a reputation to keep.Do you know how many girls will be heartbroken to see me as only a Sexy Greek God and not a Perfectly Sexy Greek God?'
Not able to control my laughter,I sat down laughing, dragging down Matt with me.Both of us sat there laughing or the next few seconds, until we were interrupted by a pair of Converse. I looked up to find myself captivated by a familiar pair of piercing brown eyes.
His eyes traced my arm,all the way to my fingers, which were laced comfortably with Matt's and lingered there for a few seconds and then met with my eyes again. But this time, his eyes were cold and hard and empty, unlike his deep chocolate ones, they reminded me of a storm, whirling within.
Not allowing our eyes to connect,he walked off without saying a word.
As I saw his last steps disappearing round the corner,I looked at Matt who had almost slipped out of my mind in the tense exchange between Caleb and I.
Matt's eyes had turned a shade darker in concern,he was about to open his mouth to say something when I stopped him with my deep breaths which quickened by the second. All the surroundings started making me dizzy as they disappeared into a whorl. My hands trembled and slowly my entire body was shaking. The tears forming in my eyes blurred the image of Matt who held me against his chest, running one hand in circles on my back to calm me down and the other hand rummaging through my backpack. Finally finding the pills,he hand one to me.I shook his hand away as flashes of that night came back. Those brown stormy eyes that eyed me menacingly with a pure glint of evil and a belt lashing towards me.I put my hands up in defence and screamed into Matt's t-shirt as he pulled me closer to him.Matt forcibly yet gently made me gulp down the tablet with some water.I held on tight to Matt as my breaths stabilised and I relaxed against his body.Matt wiped the tears flowing down my cheek and hugged me tighter and I pulled him closer to me as I knew that he was trying to control his tears and calm his emotions as well as be there for me.We stayed like that for some time till the shrill sound of the bell
woke us from our trance.I got up meekly with Matt's help and walked towards our class, not letting go of his hand.
'Where do you think you're going?'
'To class?'
'No,I'm taking you home. You need some rest.'
He gave me a stern look which I knew was one of his ways of showing concern.
'No,we'll need to get a slip from the nurse and I don't want any attention and plus I told Caleb that we'll work on the paper today.'
Matt continued to give me that stern look and our stare down lasted for a while until he finally gave up.
'Fine, then lets skip this period since we're already late and you could use some rest.'
Knowing it was no use arguing with him,I walked with him towards the parking lot.
