Song: The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow
☾
"When I was a boy," Jeremy started saying as he held me on his lap, "Fintan and I would run around the woods and pretend we were King. We had solutions to all the problems of the world, we could do anything."
I sniffed and a tissue miraculously appeared in front of me, so smiling at Fintan I took it and blew my nose.
Jeremy continued his story, "And then we went to 'Alpha' training and were trained to become warriors, we had to be hard, we had to punish those who would destroy us. We learned about the depravity that exists, we discovered the darker parts of our world, the evil that lives in packs. We learned about the insanity in the world so we could protect our pack, our family."
Stroking my hair he kissed me lightly. "And we learned how to combat evil." Then pulling back so he could look at me, "I know it's hard for you, but Fintan and me have been training for this time our whole lives. It's our mission to eliminate this evil, and all that the 'dark ones' understand is force, my love. You can't reason with them, from the point of view of the Archaics we are simply fools and need to be eliminated."
Then looking me in the eye he added, "But we always gave them a choice, love, we gave them all a choice before we came here. They chose to ignore it, their belief in slavery was absolute, that they had a preordained right to own others- I've talked to so many of them. They seem to hide behind their warped beliefs of their grandfathers, the foundation of economic survival that is based on evil, there's no other word for it. And it ends now, if they choose the horror of bigotry then they have no place in the new packs the Omegas are creating."
Pulling me hard, Jeremy kissed me deeply. Putting his forehead on my own he smiled at me and went on, "You are my soulmate, you remind me of mercy. You remind me to try to understand, and that's all I can promise." I leaned back and put my hand on his cheek, I loved him so much.
"That's all I ask, Jeremy."
Clearing his throat, Fintan broke in, "Kirsteen, Salovar is waiting with a group of the Omega Resistance. Will you be able to meet with him? I can reschedule if you're tired, they'll understand."
Looking over to Fintan I nodded my head 'yes'. "Just give me five minutes and I'll be down. I need to wash my face." Jeremy helped me stand and patted my butt. "When do you need to leave?" I asked him.
"I have to go back now, father's been in charge long enough."
I sighed and went to the bathroom to freshen up, and when I returned Jeremy held out his hand. Walking Jeremy downstairs I walked him to the front porch and kissed him goodbye with tears in my eyes. Fintan walked up behind me while I watched Jeremy walk to his waiting car, pausing as he stood at the open back car door. He had to have bodyguards, we all did so I knew he'd be safe. Smiling and blowing me a kiss, he turned and disappeared behind black tinted windows of the black SUV.
But I knew he watched me as he drove away.
Fintan wrapped his arms around me, he was my anchor here and I was filled with a sense of calm.
"Come, love," he said and led me back through the door and to the room filled with these newly freed wolves. I could feel their excitement at their freedom while I willingly put my head into a noose of responsibilities.
