My brother was the spitting image of our father. Me being the mixture of appearances between our parents, and he was the mixture of mannerisms. He was loud with comfortability, easy, and alert in any new situation. He was our unofficial shrink of the house. He is an enigma to first-timers and a tough arse at first glance, but truly he was a teddy bear and a 'mama's boy'. Being the middle child he really lived up to that state of the medium and being it. I detect a proud mate for him.
His room was opposite Reina's room to the left. I knocked on his door a little louder than necessary since we both listened to something to Keep the silence at bay. I could hear a soft song playing in the background; which he promptly turned down when he heard my knock.
"Yo," I called through the door. I remembered the small period of when Demetrius went through his rapper, slash Jay-Z phase, it was hilarious and embarrassing to be around him, but it fit him all the same.
"Yeah, hold on a sec," a muffled voice came through from the other side. I checked the handle and sure enough, it was unlocked. I entered and was soon assaulted by a strong scent. I tuned my senses down, but it turned out to be Axe, his recent obsession. He changes sprays like he's using toilet paper, but I guess I should be grateful it's spray and not some poor girls.
I looked up to see my brother still in his underwear with a vest and an open black dress shirt covering his torso. I laughed when I noticed his trunks were Patrick the Starfish boxers. Cute, I had not known he was such a dedicated fan of the show.
"Gods and Goddesses," he muttered, still not used to me barging in his room. "I said wait, but obviously I should say it in a language you understand."
"Was? Ich kann nicht Englisch sprechen so gut. Kanst du bitte das auf Deutsch sagen?"
"Du bist eine sheissekopf. Kannst du nicht warten?" My German sounded crap compared to his, even though we were both fluent. He pronounced the words better and was natural; however, I can't say the same for his Russian. I was the only one who was always in the middle- still better than the average- with both languages.
"The only shithead here is you and you know I can't wait or sit still. ADHD, remember? Plus, Rei scares me after that kick."
"The only thing that is keeping you from being beaten by this load of handsomeness," he flexed his biceps as a bodybuilder would, "is your impulsivity and your fast thinking." He frowned at that thought and turned to face me. Openly displaying he didn't like that he was outsmarted and outpowered by his sister even with his Divination abilities.
"Being the oldest has its perks," I said, my voice dripping provocatively. "I bet being a middle child isn't that bad. Right?" I smirked when he rolled his eyes.
"Alright," I could tell he was about to change the topic, "Mom sent you didn't she?"
"Well, we are a tardy pair of siblings." I shrugged.
Truth is that he could not go out of the house without checking his reflection every two seconds. It was his prized possession. Father used to play with his hair rather than Katya's and mine, back then he had shoulder-length hair that our Father would tease him about non-stop. It was annoying to him, but a kind reminder now.
"Come on bro," I started, "We need to be out of the house in the next half hour. You know how far we live from the pack hall."
"Yeah, yeah. We could go by foot; we are faster than an Alpha wolf and all, but Mom wants us to fit in a little." He rolled his eyes, "As if that would ever happen." He muttered softly under his breath, not with bitterness, but with sadness. Being Hybrids came with a price none of us wanted to pay.
"Well," I said in a chipper tone, trying to brighten the sudden, dark mood, "We need you ready, Mister Starfish, so we can be on time. Or is that brain a little slower than usual?" My voice was teasing and I had playfully narrowed my eyes, a gesture he returned until he took a somber expression.
"Can I ask you something?" He suddenly asked, not waiting for a reply. "They're telling me that I'm gonna meet him or her today," his voice was unrecognisable, so vulnerable.
I moved to stand by him, moving from the doorway, to support him. They were his wolf and vampire subconscious. "But I'm still worried, and mostly scared. So many 'what ifs' keep on invading my mind and I can't help but wonder whether they'll really accept me. All of me." He turned and looked me straight in my eyes. His eyes were glittering with pain, wonder, and most of all, fear. That combination struck me. Dimka was not one to fear anything easily.
It was very common for people, in general, to be scared of meeting their mate, but it was usually excitement that went through people's minds. It was a different scenario for us. Hybrids were a concept many people misunderstood because of our history, a history that was littered with bloodshed. People never associated with us once they find out my siblings and I are the most revered type of Hybrids, the strongest but yet most unpredictable of all Hybrids.
"Whoever they are, they will love you. Not because it was hard-wired for them to love you, but because they will genuinely want to know you, want to find out why we are, who we are. Not disgrace us. Not shame or regret you. No, they will want you simply because you are Destined, their mate. Because you are, you." Once I finished my small speech, I gave him a long hug which he returned and sighed in contentment.
"Thank you, Sis." He said, sounding a bit relieved, looking down at the floor, "I guess I needed that more than I realised."
"Alright, Bro," I started with a tentative smile. "Get ready already! You basically have twenty-five minutes left."
"Damn!" he cursed, "Get out then. I'm not dressing in front of you! I've already done my hair anyway."
I chuckled to myself, then left his room. We had another forty minutes to get ready, my mother was not that far off on the time constriction. I had a feeling I would be the type of mother that said we had half an hour left to leave for school at five in the morning. Obviously not forgetting to change most of the clocks in the house the previous day.
As I rounded the corner back to my room with shoes in hand, I felt happy. Only seeing my family made me happy, being around them made me feel this way, so I could not help but wonder how it would be with me and my Destined. Would it be Someone I knew? Someone I already had a crush on? Or would it be a complete stranger? What if they were human? Oh my Goodness, that would be terrible. They hate hybrids even more than most people. Gods and Goddesses, please don't punish me like that.
I shook off these thoughts and went to my room.
Once I had zipped on my dress, put on my shoes and applied makeup, I went to stand in front of my closet mirror. I admired my hard work and got ready for the rest of the night.
