It's when the movie ends that Ashley's phone rings. She jumps up from the sofa to fish it from her purse and take it.
"Hi, Karen," she answers, mouthing a sorry to me. While she is on the phone, I take the popcorn bowl off the living room table and head towards the kitchen. I pour the unpopped corn in the trash bin and set the bowl in the washing machine. When I come back to the living room, Ashley is clearly upset.
"Now? It's nine o'clock. You should've told me about this earlier!" Pause. "No, I'll come to you, it'll take too long for you to walk." She hangs up and groans loudly. "My idiot of a party planner forgot to have me sign some papers about the venue I'm renting, and they're due tomorrow morning or something. I have to go sign them now, but you just stay here. I won't be long." As she speaks, she has walked into her room to change. She comes out again with a pair of jeans on and puts on her jacket. "I'm so sorry, it's been a long time since we had a girls' night like this."
"It's okay, I'll just chill here or something." I gesture to the big apartment. Ashley smiles thankfully and leaves. I get a wine glass and pour some wine into it, sitting down on the couch and turning on an episode of Bones.
The episode runs and I find myself becoming bored after fifteen minutes. The penthouse feels way too big for little me. I wonder how Ashley handles it, it must feel lonesome. Adam lives here a lot of the time though, so I suppose she doesn't mind some time alone sometimes.
I pick up the remote and find the Spotify app on the TV. I wish I had such a cool TV. To watch Netflix, I have to have three dozen cables that get knotted all the time and it's just a hassle. Fern and my TV isn't the newest though. I think it's from 2005.
I put on the music so loud I don't even hear my own feet hit the floor. I dance around in the apartment with my glass in my hand, taking a sip every now and then. It's been a long time since I had an apartment that's soundproof to myself. Fern's out sometimes, but I swear our neighbors never leave the building, and I can hear when they turn on the shower, so I can't turn the music too loud.
I do a couple of twirls and close my eyes, belting out to Michael Jackson's Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. I love the free feeling of dancing with a wine glass over my head and just not caring. I open my eyes.
"Adam!"
Somehow, the wine glass slips from my hands and falls to the marble floors with a crash. Mortified, I am frozen in place as the music pounds in the background. I can see Adam snicker at me, but he conceals it with a cough behind his closed fist to be polite. I pick up the control from the couch and turn the music off. The room suddenly seems eerily quiet.
